Meanwhile, how many successful defensive gun uses (DGU) protected innocent lives against criminals last week?

Since estimates range from 750,000 to 2,500,000 DGU's per year, that is a range of 2,000 to 6,800 per day!

Any discussion trying to argue for the benefits of gun control must also address the other side of the ledger.

I like what Texas Land Commissioner, Jerry Patterson, said in response to the Connecticut shooting:

"School districts may need to arm individuals on campuses to put down a gunman like the one who killed scores of teachers and students Friday at a Connecticut elementary school, a top Texas official said Friday. 'The common denominator for the school shootings in Aurora, Columbine and Virginia Tech is that we have a target-rich environment,' said Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson. 'You have a shooter that is completely free to go about his sick fantasy. We need to do what it takes to change that.' One game changer, Patterson said, would be to arm more police officers, security guards and responsible citizens on campuses to confront a mass shooter. 'Had there been (armed security guard and citizens) in Colorado, at Virginia Tech or now in Connecticut — someone that could have changed the dynamic and to do so by having a firearm — there would be fewer lives lost.'"

just got spam promoting bans

which is doing a lot better than their

lets talk about guns

indicating they do not want to talk ... they'd rather ban than discuss/listen to facts
How do we begin to recover?

Words cannot express our heartbreak as we grieve for the children and educators killed in Newtown on Friday. As a father, I cannot even begin to imagine what the victims' families are going through. Connecticut is my home, and this senseless tragedy is unfathomable to our state -- and the nation.

As President Obama stated in last night's press conference, we must take responsibility for each other and we must take responsibility to make sure this does not happen again.

Too many families have faced heartbreak this year.

Join us in a national campaign for an assault weapons ban.

Now is the time for life-saving, common-sense legislation that would again ban semi-automatic weapons along with the high-capacity magazines that feed them.

The tragic tale of these shootings sadly repeats a common theme -- in Tucson, Aurora and Newtown, the killer used semi-automatic guns to unleash hundreds of bullets at his victims.

But gun violence is not new. Since 1982 more than 75% of mass-murders were committed with legally obtained weapons and most were semi-automatic. Of the 12 deadliest shootings in U.S. history, half have happened since 2007 -- the last assault weapons ban bill expired in 2004.

No community should ever again have to feel this level of grief. We must do everything we can to prevent this from happening again. Now is the time -- we've lost too much already.

Together we can put sensible restrictions in place to prevent future tragedy. There's more we can do -- improve background checks, closing the gun-show loophole -- but this is a critical first step to save lives. With Members of Congress set to introduce legislation that would bring back the assault weapons ban, now is the time to stand together and ban these killer weapons.

Wishing you and your family peace.

I'm thinkin common theme. they were all illegally obtained or illegally carried weapons and almost all in gun-free zones, and many were stopped because the hi cap mags jammed ...

this latest guy couldn't buy them legally so he stole them, lots of crimes occur with stolen guns, that's not "legally obtained" so he'd obey yet another law?

oopsie, this magazine holds too many, I better steal a smaller one ...

15,000 in CT per year. There would have to be a school shooting every day in CT, including weekends, to get that high.

Thank you Sir,

Where the Senate stands on guns — in one chart
With at least one lifelong National Rifle Association member — Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.a) — jumping on board with pushing new gun control measures in the aftermath of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., we thought it worthwhile to look at where the other senators stand.

Exactly half of the Senate has at least an ‘A-’ grade from the NRA.

I am now fed up with this UK defector and social saboteur of US culture, Morgan Stanley. He is talking gun control for the nth time tonight at 8:00 PM on CNN. I am DVRing this session of his talk show. I wished I could have a chance to call in and express my thoughts.

Murder rates in Lebanon (excluding political assassination and low-intensity militia gunfights):
Lebanon: 2.2 per 100,000K
USA: 4.8 per 100,000k

In Lebanon there is no gun control. Anyone can own one or more full auto rifles he likes, even light medium and full machine guns such as RPKs and PKMs are available if you are interested in owning one. Can anyone explain why the murder rate is less than 1/2 of that in US?!!!

This is Lebanon:

I believe this is the final straw and that this administration will get a AWB passed - no matter what! They will not have a weak bill either.. this will have teeth and no grandfather clause will be issued.

Has the government been preparing for this? Remember Homeland Security purchased 450 million bullets earlier this year? We could not figure out why... I am just trying to see the writing on the wall and put puzzle pieces together.

You know that those conspiracy theorists were blaming Bush for 911, I wonder if they will blame Obama for this just to get gun control moving? Just saying.

Supreme court will get involved, 2ndA will be upheld. restrictions are unreasonable. DUI is a more threat and no one is banning consumption of Alcohol. Worse, Pot is being legalized and more stoned drivers would be on the road.

We should fight for our 2ndA with our dollars and our vote.

Beiruty, you are using reason and logic in your statement. Those who actually live in the real world agree with you. Reason and logic have no place in the grabber's world.

at least the NRA will get to revise/correct ratings on Senators/Reps who got to avoid showing their true colrs for so long
Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, an "A"-rated member of the NRA, told reporters at the state Capitol Monday that "the status quo is not acceptable anymore" and called for restrictions on assault weapons, according to reports.

Sen. Joe Manchin, another "A"-rated member of the NRA, on Monday questioned the availability of assault weapons, saying on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," "I don't know anyone in the sporting or hunting arena that goes out with an assault rifle. I don't know anybody that needs 30 rounds in a clip to go hunting. I mean, these are things that need to be talked about."
Perhaps the NRA "questionnaires" sent to politicians need revising to 1 question
I suggest one easy to understand question for even the simplest minded mentally challenged politician such as Zaffrini/Bloomberg/ etc etc for example:
Is the 2nd amendment about hunting little defenseless critters like Bambi? yes/no

Drunks can't resist official oppression, and neither can stoners....and the PTB don't care about us mundanes being killed except as it enhances their own power and control.

I emailed Senator Cornyn as well as my Representative in the House, asking them to focus on people, not objects. I would have emailed Senator-elect Cruz as well, but his site hasn't changed over from campaign-mode yet. I don't believe that bans, restrictions, etc.. will help the people who so desperately need it. While it may seem a small thing, I think that we need to let our representatives know how we feel so that when they are pressured by the knee-jerk grief-driven reactionaries, they will have voices from the other side ringing in their ears as well. I tend to believe that much of the gun control stuff right now is grief-driven and that once cooler heads emerge, the gun-bans and such will hopefully fail to make it out of committee.

I don't know about them, but if I were in Congress, the voices from my own district/state would mean more than the talking heads on TV.
