That's awesome...but not surprising. I'm not going to go any further with my opinion on this one lest I incur the ban hammer.

And the one about taking up your sword, and selling your cloak to buy a sword if you don't have one.

That one is not part of the Lords Prayer.
(traditional)
"Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth,
As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen."

I'm a big fan of Matthew 10:34 in situations like this

Sorry I quoted the wrong one.
STUDY THIS
Psalm 23
Psalm 22Psalm 24
Psalm 23English Standard Version (ESV)
The Lord Is My Shepherd
A Psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.[a]
3 He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[c]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely[d] goodness and mercy[e] shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell[f] in the house of the Lord
forever.[g]

I'm conflicted....
"Hamermesh cited the fact that he teaches large courses with hundreds of students as a key reason for his decision."
So on one hand I'm thinking that this seems to indicate that large classes are clearly inherently dangerous (aside from a lousy way to get an education)....while on the other hand....I'm hearing a song running through my head:

I'm going to throw the (expletive deleted) Flag on Mr Professor. He's going to Australia to teach, rather than stay at UT and "teach" 500 kids at a time in an auditoriun because there may be guns?
I'm not buying it. He was leaving anyway and the antis got him to make a statement on his way out.

I call pigsqueeze on this on:
Hamermesh retired in August 2014, but continued on as the Sue Killam Professor Emeritus, teaching every Fall through 2017. The professor says the law, which will allow students to carry concealed weapons on designated areas of campus, will make it much more difficult for UT to attract employees.
So what does this actually mean?
It simply means a RETIRED professor who holds an honorary title of "Professor Emeritus" resigns said title. It does NOT mean that UT lost a teacher who was long in the saddle. He was out in a year or so anyway. My guess is that this opportunity down under came at a convenient time for him to accept it and he used Campus Carry to make a statement explaining why he was cutting short his promise to teach for a couple years into his retirement.
It means absolutely nothing short of being a politically motivated stunt that can feed the journalist a sensational story.

His whole argument is bogus, because a disturbed student can just as easily bring in a gun tomorrow. And if he is teaching a 500 student lecture, he is most likely teaching younger undergrads, who are too young for a LTC anyway.
I agree, this is just an anti- opportunist statement.

My own response to open carry is changing, at least by a little. This morning I was in a rush to get stuff to some property we own and carried my handgun (of course!) under a tee shirt. Normally I don't do that. This time I was leaving my home for another bit of property we own, going from one place I don't need a license to another.
My concealment was OK, just not up to my personal standards.
Then I got to thinking. What if it were after Jan. 1? What if I were on my bike and my shirt flew up?
And, I have to confess, I started thinking "So what?"
I'll always prefer concealed carry, I'm certain of that. On the other hand, it would be nice to see guns freed of emotional baggage. I drive a car at 60 MPH and aim 24,000 foot pounds of energy within feet of fellow citizens who are doing the same thing to me.
I drive a Kahr that could release around 350 foot pounds of energy - except I fortunately never do that.
And the gun is the bigger deal?

Personally, I am overjoyed that some "mentally or emotionally troubled" professors will stop teaching here.
