Just received an instant message from my son at A&M. He had just received a crime alert email:
Aggravated Robbery

Parking Area 40

Texas A&M University-College Station

At approximately 9:58 p.m., October 6, 2007, University Police Communications received a 9-1-1 call from a Texas A&M student who reported being a victim of a robbery.

The student, who was not injured, told police she had parked her vehicle in lot 40 and proceeded to walk towards her residence hall. While walking in the parking lot, two African American males approached her from behind. One male pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded her purse. After taking the victim's purse, the suspects fled the area. Upon reaching her residence hall room, the victim reported the incident.

Just prior to the reported robbery, University Police officers were dispatched to parking area 40 in response to a report of two African American males believed to be burglarizing vehicles. While in lot 40, a University Police Bicycle officer observed a vehicle backing from a parking space and recognized the driver's clothing as matching the description of one of the burglary suspects. The officer shined his flashlight into the vehicle and ordered the driver to stop. The officer and his bicycle were struck by the vehicle as it continued to back from the parking space. The officer dismounted his bicycle as the vehicle continued backing over it. The vehicle, described as a newer model silver Cadillac with dealer license plates, fled the area. The officer was taken to the College Station Medical Center and later released. University and College Station Police officers pursued the suspect vehicle through the city of College Station, onto South Earl Rudder Freeway (SH 6), and into the city of Navasota. Other assisting agencies included the Brazos County Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Grimes County Sheriff's Office, and the Navasota Police Department. While in Navasota, the suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot. One suspect was apprehended.

It is believed that the aggravated robbery and the motor vehicle burglaries in parking area 40 are related.

Arrested: City of Houston resident - Isiah Delance Holden

Criminal charges are pending. The aggravated robbery and the motor vehicle burglaries are currently under investigation by the Texas A&M University Police Department.
It's a good thing firearms aren't allowed on campus!

My son parks in lot 40 so was heading over to check his car. He is a strong proponent of concealed carry on campus. Maybe the legislature will see fit to change the law by the time he is old enough to get his CHL.

Looks to me that the perps were not worried about the possibility that they might get expelled for violating university policy.

Not surprising since the laws against aggravated robbery and assault on a police officer didn't seem to faze them either.

It never fails to amaze me that otherwise intelligent and educated people can fail to see these simple truths.

?????

Did I miss something?

I don't think the "perps" were students there.

Sounds like a couple of BG's applying their trade where they know they will have a high degree of success.

Sad.

Agreed...
Practically none of the campus living areas are "closed to the public". Especially on the back side of the campus near the rail-road tracks or near the Northgate area. Nice campus, but too close to a shady part of College Station.

I'm amazed the officer didn't unload a magazine or two into that vehicle. It seems like if they backed over his bike while he was on it he would have been able to justify the use of deadly force.

I think Frankie was being ever so slightly facetious.... ;-)

Do they let them have guns? Schools are gun free zones after all remember

I bet all he had was a roll of quarters and a flashlight.

If you think about it, the perps have a lot less to lose than do the university students.
1) A university student can be expelled. A perp, with no interest in attending school, isn't enrolled and doesn't care.
2) A typical college student wants a clean record. A criminal isn't deterred, and likely knows he will be out in little time anyway.

I've lurking here for a while now, but this post made me want to respond and finally got me over the hump to register.

If this happened at the time stated it was just as the football game between TAMU and OSU wrapped up. There were over 86,000 people on campus - a target rich environment.. and these guys came all the way from Houston(?) to take advantage.

I've been on, around, and close to that campus for going on 40 years now.

Brings home that no where is safe anymore.

I have been concerned about leaving my weapons in the truck while attending games, but figured with many people around, the KK keeping watch along with all LEO from Brazos and surrounding counties, that auto burglaries were not likely on central and west campus.

Guess I'll re-think and leave in Austin. But then, CS is no longer safe as it once was as this post says.

We need to press the Leg and Governor to take up his proposal of last Spring to allow carry on campus.

Uh, neither do I. All the more reason why getting expelled would have little meaning for them.

I'm writing the Battalion to congratulate the school for taking the politically expedient position and putting this woman's life in danger by not allowing her to be armed.
