Verizon Wireless Customers

I was a bit perterbed when stopping in my local VW store. There was a HUGE 30.06 posting on the front door. (picture didn't come out). I really like their service, but didn't actually go into the store until recently so didn't know about the postings. I just sent the CEO and his board the following letter. You folks may want to consider doing similar if you're VW customers as well:

Contact info for Verizon leadership: http://aboutus.vzw.com/leadership/executive/index.html
I have a bit of a problem.

I'm a new customer (713.545.****) with a family plan. We just got our phones have have little problems with the service or the phones. In fact, we're very happy with the service to date. After doing quite a bit of research and switching to you guys we've decided Verizon Wireless is really the best service in town.

We originally ordered our phones and had them shipped to us, so we never went into a physical store. We had a bit of an issue with the wife's phone so we made a stop in one of the actual stores to have them check it out.

In walking up to the store I noticed a "No Guns" sign on the door. Normally those don't apply to me because I'm a concealed handgun license carrier in Texas and there has to be very specific wording on the doors (30.06) wording in the sign to bar me from entering. Upon further inspection of this sign I noticed that the sign actually had 30.06 wording within the sign and thus made it illegal for me to be armed within the store.

To some folks that may mean little, but I happen to be a big supporter of 2nd amendment rights, and a store that bars me from exercising those rights on their property normally does not get my business at all. However, my wife and I both believe Verizon Wireless offers the best cell phone service in our area and do not readily wish to switch to a new carrier. At the same time we also don't want to patronize a business that doesn't allow us to express our 2nd amendment rights to bear arms and protect ourselves and our families. We have not yet decided if we're going to keep our new service, and in truth that really depends on the response to this letter.

Barring unlicensed guns is one thing, barring an honest citizen who's been proven reliable and an upstanding citizen by virtue of qualifying for a Concealed Handgun License in Texas is simply a slap in the face.

Facts you know about me and any CHL holder in Texas:
  • I have NEVER been convicted of a Felony.

I have NEVER been convicted of a Class A misdemeanor or a Class B in the last five years..

I have never been diagnosed with a mental condition that would impair my sound judgment.

I am a LEGAL and TAXPAYING resident of Texas.

I have passed a gun safety and proficiency test.

I have attended classroom instruction on safety and state laws pertaining to guns and gun safety along with a qualifying written exam.

I have my fingerprints on file with the state of Texas.

I am not delinquent on any taxes, school loans or child support.
I must meet all of these requirements in order to have a CHL in Texas. How much do you know about your other customers in Texas?

Furthermore, refer to these conviction rates on the official Texas Department of Public Safety website. They clearly illustrate that individuals who are CHL holders are convicted of less that 1% of all criminal activity and are therefore among the safest and most law abiding citizens in our fair state.

The report is as follows: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administra ... vrates.htm

Now, knowing the above, why do you prohibit me, my wife and other CHL holders for exercising our 2nd amendment rights at your location?

You should be aware that your response will also be made public.

I hope you get the result you seek. Everyone with Verizon service should email them, as well. Fill their inbox over at Verizon.

Thanks for the heads up - I will be looking in another month or two as my current contract is about up and I have been happy with my current provider, but I wouldn't mind a different one either.

One thing to remember about a lot of these stores is they are not 'company owned', but contract stores owned by someone else. This goes for all of the wireless providers. The wireless company only controls the product exclusivity under contract and the store and its parent company can run the property as it sees fit.

I carried into my local Verizon phone store in Grapevine just 2 weeks ago. There was no sign on the door. I haven't had the occasion to carry into the local wireless store in Southlake yet. Is it possible that it was your local store manager's decision to post the 30-06?

In any case, I am wall to wall Verizon. I have their cell phones, their land line, their FiOS television, and their FiOS Internet access. If I don't pay my bill, I'm hosed.

OTH, they treat me like a prince and give me 25% off all of my purchases now.

No sign at the Store on Beltline and Hwy 183 in Irving. Nor is there a sign on the Store in Tyler on South Broadway.

In early 2005 I had occasion to walk into a corporate-owned Verizon Wireless store off of the I-45 South/Gulf Freeway, close to Houston-Hobby airport. It appeared to have prominent 30.06 language on the front glass doors, coupled with an unarmed, uniformed security guard just inside. Since then, I have not had occasion (nor inclination) to visit this store again.

So far this is the only Verizon Wireless store I have found to be 30.06 posted.

Yep, i've been to another store locally too and no sign, so that seems to be an independent operator decision. I'm going to see if i can get some contact information on the decision maker for that store (the one at 45 and Fuqua) and send over a copy of that letter.

If you go by that store, see if they are a company owned or agency store. It could be that the company stores are posted and not the agency ones.

wow. i have one heck of an update on this....

I just got a phone call a few minutes ago from the assistant to the VP of Verizon. She called to personally thank me for bringing the facts involved with that signage to their attention and to say that Verizon now has a company policy in place specifically barring any of their stores in Texas from posting those signs and that the sign I mentioned has been removed.

I was completely floored.... i mean completely.

I guess sometimes the good guy does win and sometimes large corporations are human afterall.

you guys please join me in emailing the corporate office folks listed above and thanking them for the clarity and good judgment in their policy. It's important to point out mistakes but it's even more important to point out when someone makes the right call.
