It was mentioned on another thread that it is perfectly legal to obtain a non-resident license from a state that offers reciprocity to Texas, considering the extremely long wait times we are experiencing right now for new licenses and renewals.

Has anyone pursued this option?

What states are the most appropriate states to do this in?

It looks like I’m approaching the halfway point in my wait. Would it even be useful to pursue this option at this point?


My dates look like this:

Date Course Taken: 3/15/08
Date Application Sent: 3/17/08
Date Payment Received: 3/25/08
Date PIN Issued: 4/9/08

Fiancée’s dates look like this:

Date Course Taken: 3/15/08
Date Application Sent: 3/17/08
Date Payment Received: 3/26/08
PIN still not issued.

I got the Utah license. There are several instructors in Texas who are also certified to teach the Utah requirements.

The Florida License is very hassle free. You simply order the paperwork from their government website, get your fingerprints done over at DPS, get a passport photo, a money order, and a copy of proof of any training with a firearm (hunter's education certificate, military training, NRA certification, etc.) No class is involved.
It also usually arrives within half the time, 30 to 40 days.

Florida looks like an easy process. I ordered the forms last week, so should be here soon.

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING DOCUMENTATION
1. A photocopy of a certificate of completion of any of the courses or classes listed below. Do not send your original cer-
tificate because it cannot be returned.
2. A copy of any document which shows completion of the course or class or evidences participation in firearms compe-
tition;
3. An affidavit from the instructor, school, club, organization, or group that conducted or taught the course or class attest-
ing to the completion of the course or class by the applicant below. Be sure to submit the original (notarized) affidavit
but make a copy for your records because it cannot be returned.
• Completion of any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission or a similar agency of another state;
• Completion of any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;
• Completion of any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law en-
forcement, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school, utiliz-
ing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission,
or the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services;
• Completion of any law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investi-
gators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;

discharged persons may submit a copy of the DD-214);
• Is licensed or has been licensed to carry a firearm in this state or a county or municipality of this state, unless such
license has been revoked for cause;

Association-certified firearms instructor.




So it looks like as long as your CHL instructor is a NRA certified instructor... it should work..

Looks to me like this says Texas certified CHL Instructor is OK. Does not have to be NRA certified.
