Ladies: gun carried in purse dangerous to children

Post by 57Coastie »

Heads up, ladies with CHL:

Four-year-old child shoots self with grandmother's gun in shopping cart at Sam's Club. Girl in critical condition. Grandmother had valid weapon permit. Young girl apparently grabbed handgun concealed in grandmother's purse.

Remembering

Hate to hear about the Kid. But Having a CHL puts added responsibility on a Person who carries a weapon. Remembering you have the weapon, even in your Purse if you carry one.

I just read this on the news, too. These kind of things should not, must not, ever happen!! Especially if you have a CHL you should know better than to always, know where your weapon is at and be in total control of it. I guess next thing that will happen is the 3006 sign will go up on all the Sam's stores... Wally world...

"Tara Stewart, South Carolina spokesperson for Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. Stewart said as of right now they do not have a policy on concealed weapons, but after this incident, that could change."

Yep, I bet there's a MEMO already in the works to be Faxed to all Stores to make CHL's off-Limits.
But, will have to wait and see. Watch the store windows. Hopefully not.

I don't think a bizarre event in Columbia, SC will affect nationwide Wal Mart policy, much less the Texas Wally Walk.

This is a tragic example of failing to gun-proof children, instead of child-proofing guns. And at the same time, it's a perfect example of why purse carry is a very bad idea.

Ladies, we understand that it's much more challenging for you to find ways to carry on-body, and purse carry is a convenient easy alternative. But every criminal wants your purse (the gun is a bonus), and every child loves purses as a source of gum and candy (the gun is not a bonus).

Please don't carry in your purse.

Let me add: just the first 20 comments (out of 300+) at that news site left me shaking my head.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. This story simply means one person did not carry/control their purse properly. There is nothing wrong with purse carry when done properly.

I honestly doubt it though. Walmart is not stupid. Currently they have no liability regarding a CHL'er doing something stupid, as well as are not alienating a fast-increasing body of shoppers. (Notice that they don't even have a ghostbuster sign up?). They really seem to take a neutral stance on most everything.

To put 30.06 signs up would alienate a large group of shoppers in Texas. I don't think they are going to do that.
Don't be to sure, if that kid had shot another customer, how long do you think it would be before Wal-mart was sued for allowing civilians into their stores with guns. Not that it is right, but it would happen.

:iagree:
This is not a ladies only issue either. Anyone that carries off-body, and there are a lot of them.

*sigh*
Hopefully not. Remember the CHL guy that killed a guy in Walmart as he was stabbing his girl friend that worked there? That didn't stop the Wally-Walk.

As a woman, I have to agree, that IMO it's a bad idea to carry in a purse. I have done it, but I was very uncomfortable with it. I would hold my purse tightly up against me; it was difficult to shop that way, and not only that but it made my purse that much heavier. I no longer carry that way, it is on my body or not at all. If, for some reason, I can't carry on my body, my husband is there carrying on his. Now, the only time I put it in my purse is when I need to use the ladies room. I'll remove my gun, still holstered, place it muzzle down in my purse, then put it all back when I'm done with my business.
