Denver police arrest man carrying guns into Pelosi's hotel
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5963473.html
DENVER — A man who tried to carry two hunting rifles and two pistols into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's downtown hotel remained in police custody Sunday.
Pelosi and other guests briefly left the hotel during the Saturday incident but were never in danger, Secret Service spokesman Malcolm Wiley said.
The man, Joseph Calanchini, 29, of Pinedale, Wyo., faces a charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon. Police officers at the Sheraton hotel noticed him carrying a rifle-type case at the entrance and detained him.
Wiley said he didn't know if the weapons were loaded.
"The speaker was never in any danger and she appreciates the quick and professional response of the police," said Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly.
--------End of Story----------------------
So many questions!!! Of course the DNC is in town so the 2nd amendment is suspend in Denver.

Or this could be illegal in Denver, i really do not know.

Seems to me, that if he had a legitimate reason for carrying those weapons (i.e. he was going hunting), then there should be no reason to detain him.

What is sad it that it even happened, the poor guy was apparently a victim of circumstance.

Even if Denver has a "carry direct from car to house, car to range" type law, it could be argued that a place of lodging would be considered part of the travel from home to gun store. Especially if the guy had recent work done on his rifles. Hopefully the local DA kicks the case after the brew-ha-ha dies down.

I can understand the rifles, but two pistols? Will South Africa let you bring in pistols? Have a problem with the arrest for carrying the rifles, but the pistols have me concerned.

Seems to me that even if he
didn't have a legitimate reason to be carrying those guns, they had no reason to detain him.

Why?
All the guns were in closed containers according to the news story.

"I'm amazed. It's not like they were illegal weapons, they were all registered to me," said Calanchini. "It was bad timing."
Police say Calanchini had permits for the rifles, but did not have concealed permits to carry two pistols that were found in his luggage. Calanchini says he forgot they were in there.
He was charged with unlawfully carrying weapons, a misdemeanor. Calanchini is being held on $10,000 bond at the Denver City Jail.
Wow, where to begin? Here we have another sportsman who thinks his guns are registered (he lives in Wyoming, so they're not). Denver police said he "had permits for the rifles", when there is no such thing in Colorado. And they've charged him with UCW for pistols that were
packed in his luggage!
And finally, for this
misdemeanor UCW charge (a bogus charge, if that's not already clear), he's being held on
$10,000 bond?
I think it's clear that the $17 million special appropriation to the Denver PD wasn't just for equipment and overtime related to the DNC, but purchased some special favor.

Calanchini, who is registered as an independent, says he doesn't know who he's going to vote for yet.

When I first read the article, it bugged me that the guy would get arrested for no reason other than going about his business & not paying attention to the "high & mighty" muckety-mucks running around Denver. Then I say the other article that talked about the pistols & that struck me as strange. A friend of mine was saying how restrictive Africa can be on the type of gun you bring with you to hunt. He said something about not being able to bring a pistol or an auto-loader.
So that part of the story has me questioning the pistols. May not be anything to it, but it made me think.

Well, these jokers are making it harder and harder for my wife to continue wanting to vote for Obama.
She lost it when they chose Biden, and when she heard this, she said she's for McCain now, pretty much no matter what.

Found another story that says he was in town on business and had just picked up the rifles from being worked on (scope mounts installed). Not from the story, but i'm sure he drove to denver and, like me, stuff the pistols in a bag (luggage) to go in the hotel. (think car gun here) Probably threw the "I forgot they were in there" story out of fear. This is just guessing on my part.
In a nutshell, it is still a suspension of rights for the DNC convention.
