my Glock 19 is jamming

its about 3 months old. i'm shooting blazer fmj for targets and hydra shock for carry. first trip to the range with brand new gun fired about 150 rds with 1 jam. 2nd trip was the same, 1 jam. 3rd and 4th and 5th no jam. todays trip 100 rds and about 5 jams with the blazers. every trip i'll fire 1 mag of the shocks just cause and those have been 100% but of course am not firing as many. i did notice some of the metal flaking away on the center of the locking block and the tip of the firing pin safety. don't know if that has anything to do with it. ill change target ammo for one and make a trip back to the dealer. i'm relatively new and take advice well, thanks.

I'd recommend changing ammo. Try WWB and see how that feeds...

What type of "jam" are you experiencing? Failure to eject the empty shell? Failure to feed the fresh round? Smokestack (empty shell stuck in the ejection port?)

Check your firing grip. If your wrists aren't consistently locked, you can absorb some of the energy the slide depends on to operate properly in your arms and cause failures. If you experience fewer incidents with more powerful ammo, this could well be the cause. (More powerful ammo produces more energy, so the loss of a bit of it isn't as critical as with the relatively low powered blazers.)

This suggests that on those occasions the slide is not reaching its full rearward travel and beginning the return stroke before it should. The grip issue is a very likely candidate. One way to test this is to have another experienced Glock shooter run a couple of boxes of the ammo you've had trouble with through the gun. It's a relatively cheap test - if the issue doesn't recur, the grip problem is a real good bet and very easily fixed. Here's a good article that might be helpful.

Another possibility is a worn recoil spring. From your post, you haven't shot it enough to reach that point, but it still could be the problem (or part of it) if you bought the gun used.

Most of these have been mentioned:

-change ammo (ie Remington feeds well in my G27)

-maintain firm consistent grip if it is primarily smoke stacking

-field strip, clean, and lube (important to do this to ALL new guns and clean after each trip to the range... more so since it is new and breaking in.

Hope this helps. If I think of anything new, I'll mark this thread to come back to later.

When my wife shoots her Glock 19 she invariably limp wrists it which then results in a smokestack. When she concentrates on shooting with a firmer grip she has no problem. However, after shooting for awhile she naturally tires and then the limp wristing begins and the smokestacking starts in with a vengence.

I've put thousands of rounds through her pistol without a single problem at any time. I've never experienced a single smokestack or failure of any kind with my Glock 19 either.

Certainly your smokestack problem could be other than limp wristing but I'm betting that's the problem.

:iagree: +1 on limp wrist. Also, a clean gun is a reliable gun.

thanks, i detail stripped and cleaned and had some crud in it. bought winchester fmj, academy didn't have much to choose from. put 100 rds through it today paying more attention to tightening my grip and no problems. plan to put many more to rebuild my confidence in my carry gun. still concerned with the metal flaking, thanks again guys.

Yah, I sometimes have the same problem with my 19, and it's because I have a weak grip that I need to fix, which will also fix my low shots

The thought of replacing a 1911 with a Glock is pretty hilarious. Maybe a 3" Kimber

:iagree: ++ with the limpwristing... I almost exclusively shoot Blazer FMJ thru my G19 (relatively cheap at Academy) and have put somewhere around 1,000 rds thru without a single malfunction.
