"(CNSNews.com) - A cutting-edge technology that will enable law enforcement officials to detect concealed weapons on individuals is raising constitutional concerns in some quarters.

The Boulder, Colo., office of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is developing a prototype of a radar-like apparatus that emits low-level electromagnetic waves into crowds to identify individuals carrying concealed objects.

"It's under development," said Fred McGehan, public affairs officer for NIST in Boulder. "We don't have a prototype yet, but we expect to have one by the end of the year."

The new device would assist law enforcement officials in their efforts to identify individuals with concealed weapons, such as knives and all varieties of firearms."

Either that or we'll all have to switch to those high tech ceramic pistols that cost more than a months salary.

If it hits the market, then we need a law in Texas making it illegal for any person, organization or governmental agency to own, possess or use. We can't stop the feds, but having a machine designed to detect something that isn't illegal is absurd. Privacy rights groups will go nuts over this and rightfully so.

Chas.

:iagree: They should propose a law against this thing before it gets to Texas.

I really don't want to have to wear tin foil underwear! :eek6

Soon, sobriety checkpoints will be the norm in Texas. This is a legislature who obviously puts special interests (in this case, MADD) above personal freedoms. I would suspect the same legislature will welcome other privacy-busting technology so long as palms are greased by special interest lobbyists.

If anything, I predict laws that will legalize further invasions of privacy and erosions of our rights under the 2nd and 4th amendments.

Our tax dollars at work ...against us. Although this article was from 2001 and the study would take 3 years after that. Is there any more recent update? I couldn't find one. Found a few other articles but from 2001 too.

Maybe that contraption doesn't work? :clapping:

Here's some other examples of your tax dollars at work:

Ok so maybe I don't understand why everyone is so negative about this? I agree that citizens should not get these, but I don't see what is wrong with police officers carrying them? We have to let them know if we are carrying anyways, right?

I think it would be good for the police to know if someone is armed or not, and it will be another reason for someone who is not suppose to have a gun to not have one.

Now I just hope I don't miss a 30.06 or a 51% sign any time soon.

I would imagine these would be useless in Texas. I can just see the thing exploding from the number of "hits" on belt buckles.
