EDINBURG -- The clerk warned Alejandro Salinas about the suspicious men who had been hanging out in front of the convenience store for the past hour.

He told Salinas to be careful as he went back out to his Chevrolet Z-71 pickup truck, that he had just filled at the Aziz Convenience Store about 11 a.m. Saturday.

Salinas walked out to his truck and hopped in.

But before he could close the door, 18-year-old Hector Severo Ramos was holding a .25-caliber pistol at Salinas' neck, said Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño.

"He says ‘Get out of the truck. I'm going to take it and I'm going to kill you," Treviño said of Ramos.

Salinas told the gunman to calm down; they could work things out.

Then he pushed Ramos' pistol away, pulled out his own pistol and fired two 9 mm bullets into Ramos' chest.

Ramos fired once into the air and his arms fell onto Salinas.

The two men tumbled to the pavement as blood spilled from Ramos' chest.

Three men who were with Ramos took off from the convenience store at Texas Highway 107 and Alamo Road in a brown Chevrolet Impala, deputies said.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and emergency crews rushed Ramos to McAllen Medical Center, where he died upon arrival.

Salinas had a license to carry a concealed firearm and a clean criminal record, Treviño said.

Ramos, a U.S. citizen who lived in South Alamo, had been arrested for giving a false report to a police officer, aggravated robbery, theft and engaging in organized criminal activity, Treviño said.

Ramos may have been involved with a local gang or attempting to start a new one, Treviño said.

Deputies continue to look for the three men who were with Ramos before he was shot. They could face murder and aggravated robbery charges, Treviño said.

"If they fled knowing (Ramos) was dying at the scene and they were all responsible for the commission of this felony, then they could be held liable for that," Treviño said.

Meanwhile, the sheriff said he would likely not pursue criminal charges against Salinas, who told deputies he killed Ramos in self-defense.

"This is not a murder," Treviño said. "This is a justifiable homicide."

Reporters are so lame these days, they do not make any attempt to know any facts before writing their story.

"Salinas had a license to carry a concealed firearm and a clean criminal record..."

Good to know his record was CLEAN, since he had a CHL.

In their defense, it's their job to convey a story to their readers. Everyone reading the paper might not understand CHL == clean record. I think I've been told newspapers are written at a 6th grade reading level. And from my experience they seem to be in line with a 6th graders understanding of the world as well.

Any 6th grader who can't point out the errors in spelling, grammar, and fact in the average newspaper needs to be held back.

Won't be doing that no more...another scum bites the dust!

I hope all those involved that are living heal quickly from this ordeal

It took alot of intestinal fortitude to push a drawn gun away and be able to draw and fire in a situation like that..I hope I have enough mental focus if it ever occurs!

Agree 100%, but it sounds like he did not have any other alternative..."He says ‘Get out of the truck. I'm going to take it and I'm going to kill you," Treviño said of Ramos.

Gun in face, 4-1 odds, BG says he is going to kill you...that's one heck of a cardiac stress test.

What worries me about this story are the other BG's that were hanging around. Assuming they got away, or don't end up in prison will they:

A) Decide carjacking is just too darn risky after watching their buddy get shot
B) Become more violent and shoot their victims early, before they have a chance to shoot back

Now, I'm not saying the guy shouldn't have shot... I'm just saying he could have finished them all off an done us a favor. (kidding of course... mostly)

When I read that it sounded like a good thing to tell the cops, whether the BG actually said that last part or not.
But maybe he really did.

In situations like this, if the BG's were gang-banger types, I just hope the other 3 that got away don't plan on some sort of retribution.

:iagree: I agree, also.

Every time I read something like this I run it over and over in my mind and wonder..."what if" that had been me? Could I have reacted as well? Could I have had what it takes to knock the gun out of my face... and draw fast enough? ....so many what if''s. I hope I don't have to find out.

And I do hope they catch the rest of them soon before anyone else gets hurt, or killed.
