Back in 1999 when I was 19, I got into a car wreck and had been drinking. A man was injured, and they changed the charges 3 or 4 times. Instead of taking it to court, we agreed on Deffered Adjudication for aggrivated assault with a deadly weapon ( considered the car a weapon). I was young and dumb and listened to my lawyer and DA tell me my slate would be clean after probation. Boy was I wrong. I will be 30 this year and everytime I buy a gun it gets delayed which is really annoying, and if what I read is correct, I will never be able to get a CHL. I know what I did was wrong, but it was in no way done purposely and it didn't involve any firearm. I have left that part of my life way behind and admit that I made a stupid mistake in my youth. I don't see why my firearm rights should be taken away because of this. I also think that lawyers and D.A's should have to fully explain the life long ramifications of deffered adjudication. I specifically remember talking about not wanting a felony on my record when this happened because I am an avid hunter and gun nut. He told me that when I completed my probation I wouldn't have a conviction and could have my record expunged. Well neither is true, because the DPS considers deffered adjudication a conviction, and you can't expunge deffered adjudication. Boy was I stupid. IS there any way around this?

I am no lawer and have never played one on TV. But I am pretty sure that you can still get CHL but I am sure that someone on here will be getting you an answer soon. I suggest that you a contact a CHL instructor cause they will be able to help you with any questions.

Utah does not consider successful completion of deferred adjudication to be a conviction. You can legally carry in Texas on a Utah non-resident permit, even if you are not eligible for a Texas CHL.

You have to take a class for the state that you want the CHL (or whatever that state calls it), but not necessarily in that state. For example, several Texas CHL instructors are also qualified to teach the Utah class. I believe Crossfire is one of those; Charles Cotton, in Houston/Friendswood, is another.

It depends on the state. You can take the Utah class in any state but you have to take the Texas class in Texas.

Not now, but it's an incentive to get your Utah license without delay. There were murmurs out of Utah last year that Governor Huntsman was considering the idea of changing the regulations so that Utah classes had to be conducted in Utah. You can read a bit about it on John Lott's Blog.

Even for Texas CHL holders, I think also having the Utah permit is a great idea. Mine stays in my gun safe unless I plan on traveling to a state that has reciprocity with Utah and not Texas, but the expiration of my CFP overlaps my CHL by almost two years, so in the unlikely event of a renewal issue, I have a backup.
