It is probably considered a 'sporting event' but the law states they still MUST POST (30.06).
Anyone know if it's posted?

No, the law DOESN'T say they must post if it is a professional sporting event. If it is a PRCA or PRBA event, then it is off limits whether posted or not.

Weak. I almost don't want to go now.
Isn't a gun range considered a sporting event?
I can CHL there...

Read the
statute under 46.035 (2). It states PROFESSIONAL sporting event. If there is a professional shooter there that is conducting an exhibition (unless you are participating in the exibiton), then I would consider it meets the guidelines and concealed carry would be prohibited.

Ok, I see the differnce now between "sporting event" and "professional sporting event". I guess I did not recognize they were different, legally.
Thanks Keith.

No you can't if it is a high school, college or professional sport shooting event and you're not participating in the event.
From the law on places where carrying is prohibited:
on the premises where a high school, collegiate, or professional
sporting event or interscholastic event is taking place, unless
the license holder is a participant in the event anda handgun is used
in the event;

This should have been taught in your CHL class. It is very important that a CHL holder understands the restrictions and the law pertaining to concealed carry. Igonrance of the law will be no defense to arrest or prosecution and you will end up as another statistic on the DPS list.

Just to better understand, does anyone know how they define professional?
I mean "PBR" or "NFL" I recognize as Professional, but what does it really mean?
Upon thinking about it some, I believe perhaps it could mean if someone GETS PAID (i.e. it is their "profession") then it could be considered professional?
(RodeoAustin does not appear to be PBR but I am CERTAIN many folks are getting paid to be there putting that event on)
Thanks!!

There is no definition provided and there is no test case AFAIK, so I always go with the PAID definition above. It is kinda the 'if it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck, then it is probably a duck' analogy. If any doubt at all, then better disarm and be safe than to be a test case.

Yes, I do not plan to carry now, I'm glad I asked before potentially getting into big trouble. I do not want to be that test case.

I saw the 30.06 sign at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. I am sure they will have one there as well.

I was there last weekend, and I did not see a 30.06 sign anywhere, and there were no rodeo events going on at the time. Not sure if you could carry there or not. Not really sure if it is professional or not. Probably best to assume it is to avoid any potential problems.
My wife almost got me into a fight trying to get in the door though. We were standing in line to buy tickets, and my wife was getting her purse from under the stroller. The line moved forward and a family stepped in line in front of us. My wife said "Excuse me Sir, we were in line". He just looked at us for about 10 seconds, then huffed and started acting like a 5 year old. They had an exchange of words for about a minute. My wife never raised her voice, but I had to tell her to just let it go, since she is not the one that is going to have to fight the guy. My adrenaline was going for the next hour.

I had a Sgt. once who always said, when we were asking if somehting was OK to do...
"If you have to ask....DON'T"
That would hold true for ..."Is it a bar (51%)?"
"Is it a PROFESSIONAL sporting event?"
"Is this REALLY a school...during other uses?"
"Is this REALLY a "premisis" of a court since it is only a municipal judge (or JP)?"
"Is this REALLY a 30.06 sign since the letters are on glass (not contrasting enough)?"
And probably any number of other situations you could name better than me.
Basically, is it worth the potential hardship if you guess wrong...or even if you guess correctly and the LEO guesses wrong.
This is a general comment, not aimed at anyone in particular.

The problem there is that Reliant Park is owned by Harris County, IIRC (either Harris Co. or the City of Houston, anyway), so 30.06 signs mean nothing. You can carry at the midway and the livestock shows all you want and be perfectly legal. The rodeo is off-limits, though, because it is a professional sporting event.
