Driving home at 5AM from a club might have been part of the problem here. Perhaps he was in a bad neighborhood. I read a lot of these stories where it seems like the situation could have been avoided pretty easily.

This is a "bad neighborhood". We hear gunshots in this area all the time. However, it is located just North of downtown Dallas, and many, many people drive up this stretch of I-35 (including myself) daily.
