Is a chl public information?

Can an employer check to see if their employees have a license?

According to the handbook: YES.
It has to be a written letter request, for a specific individual.
AND unless the inquirer is a LE agency, the DPS is required to inform YOU of the request and requestor.

I have no idea what a "standard" background check means.

In the "standard, run-of-the-mill" checks that my employer uses, it doesn't show up.

If it did show up, the only person in the entire company who would be alarmed is the HR manager. The rest of our company is staffed with normal Texans.

No, because it requires a special request. The info doesn't seem to be part of any "packaged info".

If someone does request the information they are only given a limited amount of information. Can someone please post what information is actually shared when someone sends in a request. Thanks.

It is my understanding that only the fact that you are a CHL holder is provided.

SUBCHAPTER H
RULE Â§6.113 Information Concerning Individual License Holder

(a) On written request and payment of a reasonable fee to cover costs of copying, the department shall disclose to any person or agency whether a named individual or any individual whose full name is listed on a specified written list is licensed under the Act. Information concerning a license holder that is subject to disclosure under this section includes the license holder's name, date of birth, gender, race, and zip code.

(b) The department shall notify a license holder of any request for information made relating to the license holder under this section and provide the name of the person or agency making the request.

I could not find more information on the exact procedure to follow. Someone told me on another forum that the fee is $5, which makes blanket inquiries (by newspapers, for example) impractical.

The rest is my opinion:

Knowing whether someone has a CHL is essentially useless information. particularly for employers. Knowing that someone has a CHL only tells them that the license holder has a clean record and has passed the course.

Any adult can buy a handgun, legally or not, -- from the newspaper classifieds if necessary -- and carry it anywhere, legally or not, unless they encouter a metal detector or physical search.

Why the blazes can't people figure this out, or "get it" when it's pointed out to them?

The way was told to me anyone can go to police station/court house and fine out if you have ccl lic. either yes/no.

Gene, Technically that is correct as a check of your Driver's License will show that you have a CHL. However, Information from TLETS (Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System) is for Law Enforcement use only. An agency that releases such information would be subject to the loss of the use of the system.

A request for CHL information must be made in writing to the DPS CHL section.
