Carrying a gun to Houston.

I'm going to Houston via Greyhound to visit a friend during the holiday season. Can anyone give me some insight as to whether I can carry my pistol on the bus to Houston? They have never checked us through a metal detector before, but seeing that it's public transportation, I don't know if it's legal or not.

According to the "baggage information" section of the Greyhound website, it is prohibited to carry or transport firearms of any kind...

Prohibited Items for Checked Baggage
Acids, ammunition, animals, combustible liquids, compressed gases, corpses, cremated remains, explosives, firearms of all types, fireworks, flammable liquids, furniture, hazardous materials (poisons, radioactive materials, etc.), materials with a disagreeable odor, matches, merchandise for resale, protruding articles, or any unsecured articles including those in plastic or paper bags are prohibited. Electronic equipment (television, stereos, etc.), film (flammable), and perishable items (food) may be sent using Greyhound PackageXpress with appropriate packing. Items such as money and prescription medication may not be checked as baggage and are to be carried in the customer's possession.
EDIT: I couldn't find anything that specifically address concealed carry, only checked baggage.

Hmm, well I suppose it's a start. I could understand the checked baggage rule considering the bag isn't in your possession during the trip and if the gun is loaded it could go off during a bus change. However, I'm planing on carrying it on my person the whole time, if it's legal of course..

They have to post a 30.06 like anyone else.
No Sign, no worries. Doesn't mean they won't kick you off and tear up your ticket if they do find out though, but that's all they can do. It's not illegal.

In Canada a guy chopped off the head of the guy sitting next to him on a bus as other passengers completely freaked out until the Bus pulled over to let them off. Did Greyhound's rules and regs stop him from taking a weapon on the bus, NO they didnt, Why.....because he didnt care about their rules or regs and chopped off the head of the guy sitting next to him and then tried to eat him when police showed up.
Just something to consider whether or not you carry on Greyhound as you make your travel plans.

Haha WOW! Well like I said, I definitely plan to carry if it's legal. I will keep all this in mind when I leave.

After reading this, you may want to put your gun in a case in your checked bag and fly Southwest to Houston. Might be safer than the bus. I don't remember anyone getting their head chopped off on a Southwest flight!

Prohibited Items... materials with a disagreeable odor.
In my experience on a bus, this would seem to encompass most of the individuals in adjacent seats.

On a technical note, I think you could legally carry on the bus in Texas, even if they did post a 30.06 sign. We still have the traveling exception and taking a bus intercity would appear to me to be pretty conclusive proof of traveling.
Obviously, this would only apply if you stayed in texas for the whole bus trip. Of it cuts through another state (say Oklahome on the way from Amarillo to Dallas), you woul dbe breaking the law (I think, I don't know OK's laws).

I had a friend come visit me from Az when I still lived in Illinois and he came greyhound bus . He didn't carry this was in the late 90s when he didn't have a chl because you could carry legaly there. It's illegal in Illinois so he left it at home. BIG mistake. He said it was scarry on the bus. Some scarry people that kept him up for the whole trip. He said he would never ride the bus again. He is a marine not some guy who can't take care of himself.

IIRC, I believe a few years ago the AG proffered an opinion that said that buses and trains were not real property and therefore could not impede the otherwise legal carry of weapons. Of course what might get dicey is if the terminal is posted 30.06 that you have to pass through to get to the bus. I wouldn't lose my head over it...sorry, I couldn't resist.

I believe the murder victim on the Canadian bus was snoozing while wearing headphones
to an iPod or Sony Walkman type device. The crazy guy just started stabbing him for no
reason. They had not had any words before the incident. IIRC.

That's the way I remember it as well.
I was actually up in Calgary when that happened last year...needless to say it made the 'local' news. :-|
