I am renewing very soon. I plan on doing as much online as I can. How do you prove your veteran status in order to get the 50% discount? Do you send them a copy of a DD-214?

Thanks!

Yes, DD-214

Also...make sure it's the copy of the DD-214 that shows you were Honorably Discharged. I have a couple copies and only 1 of them actually showed the discharge status.

Thanks. I'm glad you mentioned that. Just looked at my DD-214, it does say honorable.

So, do you fill out the online stuff & mail them a copy of the DD-214?

Yes. When you do the online thing, DPS will mail you a packet of renewal stuff that you have to mail back. You will have to do another set (but only one) of fingerprints, fill out a couple affidavits, a picture, and get your course certificate from the instructor. Just add the DD-214 to the pile and mail it all back in. And like someone pointed out above, make sure it is the copy with the discharge status on it. You should have been given two versions, one with a and one without discharge status (not sure why, really). A plain copy is fine, you don't need it notarized or anything like that.

My wife is applying for a CHL. She served for 10 years in the Air National Guard. Is the NGB Form 22 (National Guard equivalent to DD214) acceptable as proof of service? I would hope service in the TEXAS ANG would be acceptable to the state of TEXAS for the purposes of a TEXAS CHL.

I got the active military discount ($0) - all I sent in was a copy of the front and back of my military ID and a copy of my last LES. There were no issues, questions, anything. On the online status check, it showed everything received under the "Special Conditions" section.

As long as you're turning in an official document issued that proves your service, shouldn't be any issue.

Thanks for the answer. For the record, I sent an email to DPS and they confirmed teh NGB Form 22 was acceptable. I would have been shocked if is was not.

Simply provide your DD214 if retired for the discount. It will be one of those "required" docs to continue your application process so get that in asap.

The ANG is a component of the U.S. Air Force, as is the Air Force Reserve. It does not matter in which state you are a member, you are still a part of the U.S. Air Force. It is the same for the U.S. Army, and other services with a National Guard or Reserve Component.
