We have a family trip planned at the end of the month and I started thinking about what to do with my gun at the condo/motel type place (multi roomed hotel). My oldest son is 4yrs and I have taught him as much gun safety as possible but he is 4 and I just dont trust him :) . At home the gun goes right into a Gunvault as soon as I take it off but what about at a hotel that does not have a safe? Any tips? I thought I might just take out the magazine & keep it (the magazine) in my pocket or something. I even thought about taking one of those locks that come with the gun but that seems extreme. Also, I know the kids will want to go to the motel pool at some point too. Do you usually leave your gun in the room? Any tricks to hide it, lock it, or is that unnecessary?

If I know I am going to have to leave a firearm in the room unsecured, I try to find a hotel that has an in-room safe. Otherwise, as you thought, unloaded it keep the mag handy.

And many of the modern hotels/motels that I've been in have this feature in their rooms.

Pretty much same advise here. I always bring my "cheaper" gun with me on the road if staying in a hotel. Ex. My taurus or Bersa. If I ever had a glock or kimber stolen I would hate it. Thats why I bought the bersa and taurus. Both are reliable and if it gets stolen I am not out a 600-1000 handgun.

Highly recommend one if these for travel. Used it in every hotel room on our summer driving trip (with a 3 year old and a 1 year old), and also used it to comply with California law.

My car has one of those in it anyway, just in case I have to enter a building where carry is off limits. And they are pretty cheap too — $29.99 for a key operated box large enough to fit a full sized 1911 with two backup mags...

...which means it will fit your Highpower just fine.

This is perfect! I had not seen those before. I originally thought about just taking my GunVault as a last resort but that is great.

EDIT... actually reading some of the reviews on the combination versions it does not sound so good so I might just get one of these instead. I really had good luck with the GunVault brand but didnt know they made on that small.

That was what I did last week when in Austin. We went out drinking so I locked it in the safe. Most hotels these days have a room safe... I think. The ones I stay at always do.

You could just call them and ask if they have a safe in the room. I wouldn't mention gun... it might cause them to flip out. By the way... have you checked to see if the Hotel is firearm friendly? Some of them are post with 30:06 signs. That will ruin your day.

If you are renting a hotel room, that room is now your residence while you are there. Therefore 30.06 would not apply to you in your room.

You might also consider disassembling the gun at least to the normal cleaning/take down level and take a part with you.

It would depend on what kind of Hotel. The ones with outside room access would not be a problem. The ones with the rooms inside that require you go through the lobby are another issue.

But, if you have to go through the lobby of the hotel to get to your room and it is posted on the hotel entrance, you cannot get it to your room without violating the law.

I recently went to a seminar at a Hilton west side of Houston that was 30.06 posted (all entrances). No way to get to a room without passing the lobby and the 30.06 sign. Had to leave the gun in the car.
