...breaking it in. Put 300 rounds of WWB 230gr FMJ through some paper this afternoon through my "new" Kimber Tactical Ultra II. It functioned flawlessly except for a few FTFs(NO FTEs thankfully). I think its mostly the Kimber mag producing those errors, as its usually the last round on the Kimber mag. Going to order the Wilson conversion kit tomorrow as well as another magazine tomorrow, who has the best prices?


I had been told some horror stories about the External Extractor(which is what mine is) but I am thankful to announce it does not seem I will need to get in touch with Kimber just yet, as mine functions well. It will need 500 or so rounds more before I can declare it "carry ready" - the break-in plus 250 trouble-free rounds.

Also learned how to field strip a 1911 without a disassembly tool tonite! LOL. I had taken it apart before taking it to the range, to clean and lube it. However I had the darndest time getting the spring and GR assembly out - didn't in fact. After today at the range, and the oil getting cycled through it, it came out like a charm.



Question - what do you all use to lube your handguns? I currently am using RemOil as I have it for my Rem700. I figure you all have your preferences, care to share? Thanks!

I've got a Stainless Ultra Carry that goes everywhere with me. I never ran into any FTF's, but I was using the Wilson 47OX from the start. I didn't WANT to run into any problems after spending as much as I did!

I still can't get my recoil spring assembly out without that little tool. I can't get it over the barrell link. How'd you do it?

I was using plain ol' Hoppes for mine until I ran across a guy using the Hoppes Elite oil. I love it. I figure that the stuff has been working for years, and an improvement on something that has been working has got to be good. I've had no problems yet! Well, my only problem is that oil is so slippery that I can't keep it in the bottle. It leaks all over the place.

WHat is that?

I prefer CLP for the internal works and a slight dab of Petrol-Gel aluminum grease on the slide rails and hammer/bottom rail. An NLGI#0 aluminum grease would be just perfect, but it's dang hard to find.

A FTF on the last round does beg a certain question. What kind of mag follower are you using? I don't know too much about Kimber mags, but I'll wager that the one you're having trouble with is a round-top with no dimple. Can't stand those, myself. I guess you've deduced that your last round is "jumping the gun" and getting ahead of the slide. I'm not privvy to any secret information from Kimber, so this is a guess, but I'm thinking that most of the horrors stemming from the external extractor come from it being less tolerant of bad followers and springs.

Do be sure to stay away from Devel followers (or anything else with poor support on the rear end) and never shoot aggressive hollowpoints like Golden Sabers. Otherwise, you'll be calling the guys at Rogers Precision about feedramp inserts. If the Wilson kits are still using those clunky plastic followers, you should be just fine. SXTs are probably your best bet for hollowpoints as they have a nice gentle shape that won't strip the anodizing right off. Alloy guns require you to be very gentle with your feedramp.

Oh, and where are the pictures?

MrDrummy, it was just a matter of angle and a little twist. Putting it back in was much more troublesome than getting it out.


TXI - its a little kit you buy from Wilson that converts the internals of a magazine to their style. It helps in a couple ways, especially with an aluminum framed weapon.

i have a Kimber Custom Eclipse II that had a couple of FTFs with the Kimber mags. switched to Wilson mags and not a problem since!

I see. Is that less expensive than new Wislons?

Well, the reason you change out the follower is because it could damage the frame. No reason to stop using a mag you can convert.

But yes - its markedly cheaper. The spring/follower kit is ~$8, compared to the $20+ I'll pay for a new mag.

I'm going to purchase a few new magazines anyhow.

I didn't know Wilson had conversion kits. I'll have to get a few of those. I've tried several mag with my Raptor II and I like the Wilson's best. I've got 3 now, 1 in the weapon for carry and 2 spares on my belt. The Chip McCormick's are good too. I was kinda scared to post here, I still haven't posted pics of my Raptor, I'm sure I'll hear about it again too! Congrats on the new pistola Cyphur! Did you go with that instead of the Sigs you were considering or still looking at the Sig? I'd like a Sig myself one of these days. I really like the SAS models.

That what I use for a carry piece never had any issue with it...One thing I do highly recommend it to change out the springs somewhere around 1000-1200 rounds.. A little trick to taking these things down...Eventually you will probably lose the take down tool that came with it..I think mine lasted all of about 47 seconds after I got it home before it decided to disappear..Anyway, a common staple or paperclip can be bent and used for this just as good..

Yea, my tool disappeared sometime between wednesday nite and thursday nite. I don't think I'll ever find that little bugger.


It comes apart fine w/o the tool, until you try to take the spring assembly apart. No bueno.....

Cyphur, there are the mags ans spring upgrades I've been using and so far it great.. Even my original colt combat 6*1 mag was trouble free after I've upgraded the spring/follower..
