Range Report: Taurus PT-111 Pro con picturas!

Just got a Taurus PT-111 as a car gun and occasional carry piece, and at Academy's $329, not too bad on the wallet.

Image

Went to Thunder Gun Range this morning to put some lead to paper. Started out very inaccurate but got better with my last two magazines and I was actually able to hit the bulls eye at 5 yds  . 9 jams and one FTE. Out of 50 that's a 20% failure rate. I'm certain it's not a case of limp wrist, my main carry piece is a .45; hopefully this will improve in time and it can graduate to the adjective "dependable" as a description of its characteristics. Trigger seems to be a DA/SA and it's "supposed to" reset itself after each pull, but on the FTE it didn't. I'm not worried yet, sending my warranty card in the mail today ;-) .

I have the same weapon and have not yet, ever, had any FTF or FTEs. I have put about 250 rounds though mine in total.
the only thing I don't like about the Taurus PT111 is the sights. Id rather have a "bracket" rear sight and not a single dot, but once I got used to that, its not a bad weapon (imo)

Not bad shooting there, Karl!

I'm sorry you had "issues" with it though. I've never had a problem with mine. When you cleaned it up, were you as suprised as I was at how "greasy" it was? I had no idea that Taurus puts this greasy goo stuff on the weapons because they're shipped (literally, I'm told...as in on a boat) from Brazil and they want to protect them from rust. Now....I don't know how true that is, but I got it from a reliable source. And sure as heck, when we broke the weapon down, it was gooey!

I hope you have better luck with it in the future! I really like mine, spirited little weapon...and like you said, not bad on the pocket book.

T.

Did you cleaned it before you used it? I've had mine for a year, several hundred rounds without any problems. It is my EDC gun.

The first gun I bought, Ruger P89, gave me issues the first time I used it. Every other mag, the slide would not lock back after the last shot. I went straight to the range from the store. Once I cleaned it, I've shot over a thousand rounds without a hickup. That grease they put on for shipping causes all kinds of problems. Cleaned my PT111 before the first use and no problems whatsoever.

I replaced the straight eight Heinie sights with the Firesights from

TLynn: it was very greasy! Thick paste would be a better word; the slide, barrel, internals. Everything was good and covered. Thanks for the compliment, I've done better ;-) .

I must say, not the highest quality magazines either. Harder to load than the M&P's and doesn't like to take round 12. Definitely a fun little pistola... when it shoots. I think I'm going to go ahead and put 150 rounds through it next session. As I got closer to the 50 mark the jams occurred less frequently, I anticipate the problems working themselves out. Definitely a different experience with this purchase; my last (and actually my first) was a hungry 1911 that ate a lot of anything.

JJVP: yes I cleaned it, most of it was dissolving and removing grease and a light coat of oil to finish.

Sounds like a good coating of Cosmoline.

That would gum up ANY gun you try to shoot.

Update 5/12:

130 rounds down range today, only two jams this time. I did have a problem with the trigger not resetting on three occasions but it was quickly resolved by ejecting a round. Accuracy has improved astronomically :thumbs2:

Quahog and i went to PSC this morning for a couple hours and I put about 100 rounds through my PT111 Millennium Pro as well.
No failures what-so-ever. (other than my general abilities LOL), but Quahog game me a lot of great advice, improved my accuracy tremendously! thanks Quahog!!

The following, bear I mind, I have only shot a limited # of pistols, and not a lot of rounds down range on any other than my Sigma 9mm, but I really do enjoy the feel of the PT111. I think the grip is just about the perfect size for my hand, the trigger feels good, its a nice easy pull, smooth and bang!

I really like this weapon!

So now if I can fix my 'milking' permanently, my 'flinching', which is getting better, i would be a much better shooter, but hey, if I was that good, i wouldn't need to go to the range and make Winchester, Federal and all the rest rich "rlol"

Teamless - I have killed countless numbers of vicious paper targets, and actually got to the point that I could make pretty good groups. Then I tried a "run-and-gun" course. :cryin

Looks like I keep making Winchester et all wealthy for some time to come. Training never ends.

Regardless if it is a Taurus, Glock, Kahr, etc...It usually comes down to a good solid grip, sight picture, and good trigger control.

Kind of like golf, it takes practice...and just like golf...also money.

I have no idea what Teamless is talking about. He shot nice tight groups like a pro. At 10 yards, it was hard to discern which bullseye shot was the most recent!

I would agree, but to add a bit, it is hard to find which one was most recent, of the 2 out of 150 rounds... Maybe 1 was about 8:45 and 1 about 9:30 ... not sure which was first "rlol"

In all seriousness, dude... I thought your shooting was very good.
