Diffractive Optical Gunsight Puts Targets in Focus

Idaho National Laboratory's innovative gunsight technology, the MicroSight, a disc smaller than a dime, brings both the target and the iron sight into simultaneous focus, giving marksmen a better sight picture. The new sight has national-security applications, as it could improve safety and performance for American soldiers. Millions of target shooters and hunters should also benefit.

If you use your dominant eye only that piece of glass is useless.

Currently this is a big problem for me I can see the sights or I can see the target. I am at a loss for what to do and I figure it will only get worse as I age more. Currently I am thinking about getting those light pipe kind of sights so I can focus on the target instead of the sights. What do the rest of you old folks do, I currently wear contacts for normal seeing and add reading glasses to see up close.

I've replaced most of my open sights with peep sights. Even if the front sight is blurred, it still tends to center.
I am definitely interested in trying one of these when available.

Although the article states that these will be useful to "serious . . . target shooters" I doubt that these lenses are within the rules of competition. I almost got DQ from a fairly important match, decades ago, because I had a lens in my sight, even though it had just correction without magnification.
Due to the expense of the shooting glasses that my being serious necessitated, I had decided to try a "diopter sight" instead. Although it was within the rules, it was questioned by another competitor and I had to do a bit of explaining and present the documentation that showed that what I had purchased was indeed within the NRA rules.
I got rid of the diopter sight and went to the shooting glasses with the adjustable lenses.
I sure would like a set or two for my personal use these days, though.

Same idea, but I was actually referring to many of my rifles. I have these on all of my lever action rifles.

Also, I have replaced many of the rear sight blades in my Ruger revolvers with a blade with a hole.

because, when using dominant eye only, the field of depth will be infinite (what is device is trying to accomplish). Basically, the brain will drop 3D view and revet to 2D and hence the brain will see a flat focus world.

I shoot with my dominant eye only. It is not possible to have front sight, rear sight, and target all in focus. Frequently, I'm shooting at a location on the paper target where I think, or rather hope, the desired target is.
The reason I have moved toward peep (aperture) sights is that the rear sight doesn't need to be sharp. The eye still tends to center the front sight in the fuzzy aperture.

What?! Your eyes will 'focus', regardless of whether your brain is afforded the binocular vision of both eyes. 'Focus' is achieved by the lens in your eye, along with the muscles and filaments that stretch and shape it. Depth perception (i.e.: 3D vision) is accomplished only with two eyes (binocular vision).
Try this: Close one eye and look at a distant object. Now, while remaining looking at that object, bring your finger up next to your eye ball, say 3" in front of your nose. Now, you're telling me that with one eye, your finger is in focus as well as the distant object? I think not.
Your eye works just like a camera lens. In order for 'everything' to be in focus, the aperture (iris of your eye) would have to be infinitely small.

Not sure how important this is, but the lens is actually plastic. The technique used to fabricate this lens is single point diamond turning. This technique can provide amazing accuracy, but is limited to certain materials like plastics, non-ferrous metals, and some crystalline materials. It cannot be used on glass (with a few rare exceptions, but those glasses do not transmit in the visible spectrum). This technology is used heavily in the fabrication of infrared optics which are mostly crystalline materials (ZnS, ZnSe).

I notice that, in the picture of that product, they include a Trijicon front sight in the pair.

It comes alone or with the front sight. In my case, I ordered it with a Williams Fire Sight front.
