While browsing the Springfield Armory site, I came across the above gun.

It's a 1911, chambered in .45, and has a 13 round capacity. I assume it's
actually a 13 + 1 pistol.

When I think of double stack .45, 1911's, I immediately think of Para Ordnance,
but this Springer looks very appealing.

It's a 1911, it's a Springer, and it has the attractive feature of more rounds than
a standard 1911 in 7 + 1 or 8 + 1.

Is anyone familiar with this gun? If you have handled it, does the grip seem too fat,
since it's a double stack?

IMHO, this might be the perfect pistol. The manly round, and just about twice
the rounds of a standard 1911 without a reload.

....although, if you look at the picture, the grip frame does appear to have been widened. Hmmm... I have really no idea...

When I read the PDF I assumed it was 7+1 but came with an extended magazine. But maybe it is double stacked, I dunno.

i have had a couple of issues with my para p14 big hawg 14+1. i have sent it back to para for the mag falling out, they fixed it quickly and shipped it right back. now i am having a problem with it not wanted to feed properly. i am going to take it to a gunsmith tomorrow. i want to get it reliable and then talk myself into believing it will be reliable when/if needed so i can carry it during the winter months. if i cant get to that point i may need to look at these springers.

What are are you in? I know a guy that is good at fixing reliability issues with 1911s.

For concealed carry, I wouldn't want a double-stack magazine. I have a Taurus PT145, which is a compact DAO pistol, and even though it's compact it's incredibly thick and heavy to carry IWB. I'd much rather carry my commander-sized Kimber 1911 than the PT145 any day. (I better quit bad-mouthing the PT145 if I ever want to sell it! )

If you're considering a double-stack 1911 for hunting purposes, then I could see some merit there, if it were chambered in 10mm or something larger. For concealed carry it would just be too thick and heavy I would think.

Did you hear that Springfield is making the XDm in .45 ACP now?

I have an XDm in .40 S&W, and it's a nice-shooting pistol. They didn't make 'em in .45 ACP when I bought mine, or I would've bought it in .45.

You and me both! I got a bonus from work back in March, and in the period of about a week I bought a new Kimber, a new S&W J-Frame revolver, and a 30-30 rifle.

I hada Springer HiCap and a Kimber HiCap. I ended up selling the Springer as it was really heavy for conceal carry as it was all steel. The Kimber is polymer and has the same capacity, even shared mags. The Springfield was very reliable and accurate, just too heavy. I did swap the slide on the Kimber with a CDP slide but the stock one was a Commander length too. The Springfield is a double stack as mentioned before, the grips are thin and it is like a Beretta 92 but more squared off in a Glock way. Para makes one I believe is all steel as well and STI makes a nice one (2011?) that is polymer/steel mix and very nice looking. Both are double stacks. In response to MojoTexas I carry a single stack Kimber CDP Pro normally but if I have to go to a bad area I carry the doublestack and a spare mag. 27rds available!

Thanks for the link Andy! Phew! That's some hefty gun. MUCH to big for conceal carry.....or should I say heavyyyyy.

You'd have to have a pretty sturdy belt to carry all that weight. 40oz empty. With magazine fully loaded I'm guessing that it would weigh close to 50 oz. or so.....but that's just a guess. Fully loaded....50 oz = 3 1/8 lbs = 1.42 Kgs.

I'd sure hate to lug that beast around with me all day.

But a beautiful gun!
