certified copys from court

i am taking the class at top gun in houston and i have fax copys of court documents but do i need certified copys i have sent for package online but would like to avoid any delays , i have 3 misdemeanors fron the 80s and one is drug related but i was told that being 17 yrs ago they would not disqualify me what should i do to improve my chances any help would be greatly appreciated i was told that top gun in houston is a premier facility to take the class i am enrolled oct 7

<Make copies of what you have for your own records. (In fact, copy everything you send to DPS.) Then I would send the faxes as supplements to the info you fill out on the application.
For misdemeanors the time frame is 5 years since completion of any court mandated "time" (probation, etc.)
I would expect the DPS to take no longer, or any less time to process your app.

It is 5 years from conviction, not completion of punishment.
§411.172. Eligibility.
(a) A person is eligible for a license to carry a concealed
handgun if the person:
(8) has not, in the five years preceding the date of
application, been convicted of a Class A or Class B misdemeanor or
an offense under Section 42.01, Penal Code;

There are reasons I have a quota system for coffee in the morning. That's just one good example. :-)

Bevans, you do need to get certified copies; fax them copies of the certified documents, and then send them the originals (the certified copies). You should keep copies for yourself.
Is this clear?

I had a class B misdemeanor from 11 years ago for driving while my license was suspended (long story). I just went down to the county jail, went to their records desk and got a (non-certified) copy of my arrest record. DPS accepted it. I don't know if that may have prolonged my application process or not, but it worked.
