I wonder what caliber and type of bullet he was shot with. He was shot 3 times, once in the leg and was still able to escape under his own power.

Interesting story, with what hopefully will be a completely good outcome. From what I have read, and heard from my bro-in-law in NC, they don't have the friendliest firearms laws in the country.

Atkinson said Hill is a suspect in other crimes in the region. Hill is a convicted felon with previous charges, most of them related to property crimes.

I got my first carry permit when I lived in NC. Their laws are a bit tougher, for example you can't enter any restaurant that serves any alcohol whatsoever. Permits are also issued by the local sheriff. Wonder if Andy of Mayberry would issue them ?!

Doesn't really matter. Handgun rounds are not terribly effective people-stoppers, especially not quick people-stoppers, and this includes the .45. Most people who are shot are, as this guy was, treated and released the same day. To get quick stops, it is necessary to hit something vital, and often needs to be hit multiple times for immediate effect.

As a first responder I once treated a guy who shot himself in the thigh (from top of thigh to knee, parallel to the bone) with a .40 Speer Gold Dot, one of the most common law enforcement rounds and one with a good street record. Not only was it not immediately incapacitating, he didn't even realize he had shot himself until he picked the round up off the floor and saw that it was perfectly mushroomed. He told me he looked at his leg, saw two small holes, and actually considered trying to "walk it off' without going to the doctor because he was so embarrassed about it. It wasn't until a few minutes later that the pain and swelling began, and he called 911. He had plenty of time and ability to fight and/or run away had this been a gunfight instead of a boo-boo.

In the robber's case, tho, being shot at was an immediate "discouragement," in that it reminded the perp that he had an important meeting on the other side of town.

yep.... it's that "permit from sheriff" thing that really tics me off. I can't imagine having to register every firearm I own with the local sheriff.

You don't have to register firearms, except maybe in Durham.

Their concealed carry licenses are issued by the local Sheriff but the rules are statewide and shall issue.

Considering that NC is a "Gold Star" OC state, their CC laws are rather draconian in that you can't CC in state or national forests or National Parks or NWR's etc. NC does allow CC at rest stops.
