I need help deciding in which compact to carry. I've heard a few good things about the ruger and many about the xd. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm assuming that you've narrowed the search down to only these two, both fit your hand well, etc.

I'd go with the XD - it's a tried and true platform with a lengthy and enviable record of reliability.

I have not shot the ruger, but I do love the XD9subcompact (my wife and I both have one)

I looked very closely at both platforms as well and went with the SR9c. The xD comes highly recommended anywhere you look. I really like the opposing passives safeties. The SR9c also gets very high marks pretty much anywhere you look, but is less well known here.

For me, the xD was just a little too wide. Even though I have big hands, I guess I like skinnier guns. I was also concerned that it would be harder to conceal. The SR9c fit my hand very well. Also, the trigger reset on the SR9c is better than the xD, IMO.

I did, however, remove the magazine disconnect from my SR9c. It is a 'safety' feature that is silly, IMO. If you try an SR9c in the store and try to dry fire without the mag inserted, the striker will drag on the disconnect making the trigger feel very gritty.

But either way, I don't think you can go wrong.

I love Ruger revolvers but in this case I would go with the Springfield for semi-auto.

BTW - a great review of the SR9 and SR9c appeared in the Sept 2010 American Rifleman.
If I were to get the question of which gun is best - among service 9 mms with higher-capacity magazines - for small-handed shooters, the answer is obvious. It is the new Ruger SR9.

I've never shot the xD but I do own both the full size SR9 and the SR9c and am happy with both. The SR9c is what I carry most of the time. It conceals well, fits my small hands nicely and has proven to be very accurate and reliable. You can find a video review of the SR9c at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zT1q1C_PnIY. It's a bit long but very thorough.

Yeah, I've seen that video before. I love the first few seconds when he opens the box and says "It's a Smith and Wesson!".
