Highlights:
WEST HOLLYWOOD -- A sheriff's deputy fired eight shots at a man he believed to have just robbed a West Hollywood liquor store early Sunday, but his target turned out to be the just-robbed clerk, and the actual suspects got away.

...

“The deputy fired eight rounds and missed him,'' [Sheriff's Lt Alicia] Ault told WeHo News. “Ultimately, deputies determined that the man the deputy fired upon was the store's clerk who was pointing to them trying to get their attention.''

...

Windows at a store across the street from the robbery site were blown out by the gunfire.

So the deputy thought the clerk's finger looked like a gun? It was fortunate for the store clerk that the deputy was a bad shot. I wonder if he will call 911 if he is robbed again?

This is why Deputy Barney was only allowed to carry that 1 bullet in his shirt pocket.

:iagree:
I think that clerk will just get on the ground and stay there if ever robbed again. I wonder how far away the deputy was when he shot at the clerk. If he was at close range, I would think that he used the old "Spray and Pray" approach when the adrenalin kicked in. If that is the case here, it likely saved the clerks life. I also get the sense of some divine intervention... The odds of not getting hit with 8 rounds fired at you have to be pretty significant.

The odds aren't that great.
Adrenaline really causes "a whole lotta shakin' goin' on"

Read about Jeff Ginn 1991; sometime, http://www.odmp.org/officer/235-patrolm ... -dean-ginn" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
IIRC, both officer Ginn and the mental guy (got a letter from the city to mow his yard, was mad at the city) emptied their guns at each other at about 6 to 8 feet from each other (opposites sides of a boat, if I recall correctly), no one got hit, while Jeff was behind a tree reloading, the other guy ran to the garage, got a carbine and ran back and killed Jeff. (Even with speedloaders, shakes cause delays)

Jeff had just been at my house earlier in the month, I was trying to get officers to switch from their service revolvers to higher capacity/bigger caliber Glocks, preferably in .40 S&W or .45 then. Most did after that. (Some of those only went to the range once or twice a year; but I started inviting them to their own range to try out new things I bought back then, so I could get at least a few to go more often)

If you can dig up a copy of the statistics from the NYPD SOP 9 (or is it 5?), you would see that missing is the norm for their officers. Their department hit rate runs around 20%. Some times less. I remember seeing comments to the effect that it is not much different on a nation-wide basis, but this is hard to pin down. NYPD at least has the guts to track their hits and misses, and publish it (at least to select audiences).

However, I don't believe it is the case that each officer that shoots hits one of every five rounds. It is that one officer gets one or more good hits, and the next four or five miss completely.

That guy, Diallo I think, who was shot by several NYPD officers when they allegedly mistook his wallet for a gun was fired upon close to 50 times (rounds), but hit "only" 19 -- which is about 20%i. I never saw a breakout that showed whether one or two officers got all the hits, or all four or five officers got some hits.

Actually, it is 38% (but who's counting  )

I looked into my crystal ball and I see an eye exam and an unscheduled training day in a certain deputy's future.........

I wonder if the odds would increase if he had fired one round at 8 BGs? :smilelol5:

I hate it when I do that. :mad5 I meant to say 40%, as in that 19 is close to 20 which is 20% of 100, so halve the 100 means double the 20... and I went too fast and left out a step.

I just can't help myself....................

I know what you mean. I can proofread, reread, and then read it again. Somehow as soon as I publish/send/submit I notice just one more error. :banghead:
