looking for a new shotgun in 12 ga. looking more for something i can do some bird hunting with. nothing serious, i've gone dove hunting a few times this year and had a good time. so anyway, i know the 88 is the cheapest of the cheap but right now academy has it on sale for $140. and from what i've read it's identical to the mossberg 500, but made in TX with mexico parts and the warranty is only a year.
my other considerations are the rem 870 or the rem 887.
so what do ya'll think of the 88? is it worth the $140 to just get into the dove hunting sport?

I use a Maverick 88 for dove season, and I have no problems with it. It is almost identical to the Mossberg 500 except for the location of the safety. This means that you can not swap trigger groups out between an 88 and a 500. Other than that all components will swap between the two. The Maverick is a Mossberg product so it is a quality gun.

Only other difference is the forend is not interchangeable. I converted my Mav 88 to a 500 forend and use it for a tactical shotgun. Works great though.

Absolutely. I've run plenty of pretty heavy loads through mine, no prob.

I had a Maverick 88 I traded it off for a Mossberg 500. It would inexplicably not fire a shell at random. A trip to Mossberg didn't fix it so I ditched it because of unreliability.

Thanks for ya'lls help. I think I'm going with the 870 express. Sticking with the tried and true. It's $279 @ academy with a $30 rebate from remmington. So $250 isn't too bad.

Great choice. I'd pick the 870 over Mossberg/Maverick any day. Plus if you ever decide to sell it, the 870's keep their value pretty well.
Check out Academy's circular this week. They have the 870s on sale for $259 + $30 rebate for a final price of $229. That's about the best deal you're gonna find on a new one.
