Question Re: Selling Online

Selling some rifles and scopes on Gunbroker. In the picture of one of the scopes the serial number is visible, but not readable. I have had an inquiry asking what the serial number is.

My question, what benefit would there be to knowing the serial number of a scope? Mfg date? Is there a risk to making that info known?

Maybe they want to look up the exact specifications of the product or see how old it is? Asking for firearm serial numbers is IMO at the least somewhat suspicious... of which I wouldn't provide. :headscratch

It's not an unusual request -- serial numbers often tell potential buyers the date of manufacturing and might give clues to any revisions that might have been made to a series.

You can X the last 3 or 4 digits, like 12345XXXX instead of 123456789. That gives a legitimate buyer the information they want but reduces the risk of problems from dishonest people.
