Got all my paperwork & class done and will mail it off tomorrow.

After spending all day in class it didn't seem like much was taught or communicated to us. After the class I thought what the heck. A few clip about the BG carjacking or robbing which I all ready knew. Are are the classes taught this way?

I realize its up to the CHL holder to decide when and if it warrants pulling and possibly shooting . Shouldn't some of the laws be explained in English? All we got was the lawyer babble (no offense meant ). I have learned more from this forum than class.

Maybe I got lucky when I took my class (I was referred by a friend who took the class earlier), but Tom Estep did a great job and I recommend him to anyone that I hear is interested (and is reasonably close to League City area.

I think it is like any job. If the person doing the job takes responsibility and cares about what he/she is doing, they will do a good job in teaching, if they don't, well, you get what YOU got regretfully.

Its a good thing you were smart enough to find this forum. Tom steered me to the forum, and like you, I have learned a whole lot on here, and will continue to learn and hopefully teach some as well.

Ditto!! My first CHL class - one of the instructors (angry about previous burglaries) expressed out loud about how they "can't wait to bust a cap in one of these characters"!!

i can say for myself my class was terrible.

Classes are only as good as the instructors....
Materials are important, but not as important as the person responsible for the class.

Not talking specifically about CHL.. but..
I can give a great class with no materials... Nothing but a blackboard and a piece of chalk.... If I had to. I've done it. I taught "stuff" to lots of smart people for a bunch of years... from 2 at a time to 500 at a time... Does material... props.. etc. matter?.. Certainly, having good instructional materials can enhance the experience for any student, but, if the instructor sucks.... nothing will make it a good experience..

"Guns" attract an interesting crowd... Bravado does not a good instructor make...

Sorry the OP had a bad experience... I did too when I took my TX class.
Fortunately, I had a prior class that was excellent, and the laws were fairly similar.

It would be good, as part of the instructor requirements, for prospective instructors to be required to stand up and teach some portion of the class, and get rated on their ability to deliver the content AND STAY ON TOPIC.

Oh well... At least we have each other..

Mine was ok...the instructor did some good real world stuff. Otherwise, I went and did additional research plus read of lot on this site. There is a wealth of knowledge here.

my class was good, my instructor knowledgeable and interesting. I still have learned more from this forum and my own research than I could have in any classroom setting. I appreciate this forum more and more.

This forum is probably the best source of information on Texas CHL and firearm law that there is.

I haven't found the CHL course particularly useful either time I've taken it. I've learned my lesson though--next time I'll use an instructor recommended by this forum (that's not until 2015, so hopefully I don't forget by then).

Same here (except I've only gone through the class once).

My class was really good. Our instructor presented valuable information. I would recommend Mr. El Gatos class to anyone.

What part of the State do you call home? You may want to think about coming to one of the Texas Self-Defense & Deadly Force Laws Seminars that will be offered around the State. That won't cover everything in the CHL course, but it will be a thorough discussion of the use of force under Texas law.

This seems to be a recurring topic, and as such is a little troubling. My personal CHL class experience was not one I would recommend to anyone.
