Kimber Solo Chrony Data

I really wanted to know how much velocity was lost for the Kimber Solo with its 2.7" barrel compared to a full 5" 1911 chambered for 9mm...Not near as much as I would have thought!

So I headed to the range today with my Kimber 1911 Gold Match 9mm and the Kimber Solo.

Image

I now have over 500 rounds through the Solo and have not had a malfunction other than the first time I shot it. That was my fault as I did not read the instructions and missed the slide stop spring. I have only shot Hornady TAP and my reloads through it.

The wood grips make a big difference on being able to control the Solo..

Here is the chronograph data for the Kimber Solo and 1911.

Solo, 9mm Hornady TAP, 124g

1) 991.1
2) 979.1
3) 999.2
4) 981.9
5) 999.0

High:_ 999.2
Low:_ 979.1
Ave.:_ 990.1

Kimber 1911, 9mm Hornady TAP, 124g

1) 1153.0
2) 1129.0
3) 1127.0
4) 1112.0
5) 1162.0

High: 1162.0
Low: 1112.0
Ave.: 1136.6

Then I tried some of my reloads in both guns. 124g Montana Gold CMJ, 4.2 Titegroup, 1.130 OAL, CCI Small Pistol Primers. Mixed Brass.

Solo with 9mm Reloads
1) 969.8
2) 989.3
3) 984.1
4) 948.8
5) 975.1

High: 989.3
Low: 948.8
Ave.: 973.4

Kimber 1911 with 9mm Reloads
1) 1100.0
2) 1091.0
3) 1064.0
4) 1083.0
5) 1063.0

That looks pretty good for a 2.7" barrel..

High: 1100.0
Low: 1063.0
Ave.: 1080.2

That's a sharp looking little pistol. I've been kicking around the idea of a single stack 9mm for a long time, but until the Solo came out, I hadn't seen one that really appealed to me. I love 1911s, but I wasn't looking particularly for a 1911 platform, which is why I didn't look at the EMP and other small frame 9mm 1911s.

What kind of malfunction did you have the first time you shot it?

There is a spring that has to be caught by the slide lock when it is reassembled. I didn't read the instructions as I assumed it was like any other 1911 with a slide lock. If you miss the spring the slide will come back then not go back forward..

I corrected it and havn't had a problem since then.

I bought this to carry in the C6 vette on trips.. I had a lcp and just was never really comfortable with a 380.. The has such a nice trigger compared to the lcp..

Nice data and impressive at the same time. Thanks for the info and report.

I forgot to mention those grips do wonders for the Solo.

It is good to hear a good report for the Solo. Saw one at the gun show several months ago and 3 out of 3 of us (father, wife, and myself) liked the way it felt as a small CCW. If you don't mind me asking, where did you purchase it?

FYI, if you want a Solo you better buy one now. I have been told that Kimber is having production problems and will not be shipping Solo's until December.
