Moving to Texas from Ohio

I have an Ohio CHL, and Pennsylvania and New Hampshire non resident permits. I'll be moving to Houston in a few months and was wondering if I would be legal under my current permits until I get a Texas license. Also would my training cert be accepted in Texas or do I have to go through the training again?
Thanks

I believe the Pennsylvania permit will be honored. You will have to take a class here in Texas when you want a Texas CHL. Move here soon; the welcome mat is out!

BTW, welcome to the forum! :thumbs2:

Well, you've done three things right...
  • Got your CHL
  • Left Ohio
  • And moved to Texas
So I wouldn't worry too much about it!
:lol::

Thanks everybody for the welcome and response. Lived in Columbus for 15 years...pretty much had my fill. No firm date, but I hope my move is not too far off

I trust you will love Texas. I'm not a native, but I got here as quick as I could. :-)

I might recommend that you learn the lyrics to Bowling for Soup's "Ohio (Come Back To Texas)" -- it's chock full of references to Texicana that would be important to know as part of your immigration to a free republic :txflag:

That was me a few months ago.

I started a job in Houston on Dec 1st. House in Cbus up for sale and family moving here when school gets out in June. Been carrying here on my PA non-resident license, since Texas won't recognize an Ohio CHL. I since took Texas CHL training from Charles Cotton, who runs this board, and have recently been issued a Texas non-resident CHL.

I recommend you get your Texas CHL when practical. Your PA non-resident license makes you legal here, but the laws are a lot different from Ohio -- some laws better, some laws worse. Also, if you have any friends or family back in Ohio, and think you will ever visit Ohio, apply now using your Ohio training cert to get an AZ or FL non-resident license. When you get a Texas drivers license, your Ohio drivers license will become void and most sheriffs in Ohio will then revoke your Ohio CHL.

Best part about carrying in Texas? I've been eating in a lot of restaurants that also happen to serve booze, and have noticed my gun hasn't jumped out of its holster and starting randomly firing at people because it's proximity to liquor! :clapping: I hope the Ohio House gets off its hind end and passes HB45! :smash:

Yeah, I know the whole GFSZA thing is a theoretical risk. But after years of searching, I have been unable to find any instances of someone being charged and convicted under this law, except for rare exceptions where the person was already committing other crimes as well -- for example, selling drugs near a school with the gun being the "add-on" charge.

Also, since I am not doing anything to attract federal attention, my most probable interaction with LEO is going to be state or local and they are not going to charge me for federal crimes. (Of course, my various gun forum posts may very well have placed me on "the list" with the federal folks, but they are still letting me fly, so I don't think it has gotten too serious yet. )

Besides, it is not possible to travel in an urban area like Houston without constantly being within 1000 feet of a school. I spend zero energy worrying about it.

It didn't bother me either, but, when it came time to renew an out of state license I bit the bullet and took the TX class instead of renewing.... now it's a non issue...

Just sayin' :coolgleamA:
