I took the "instructors renewal" test online and could not help but notice it is the same test I give my students. Is this for real?

Yep, it's always been the same test. Well, it's been that way since I became an instructor in 2006.

I think they just want to make sure you know the correct answers, for when you score your student's tests!

There was one year that I remember the instructor test being different. That was probably either 2001 or 2003. I remember it had questions on it about penal code sections. Like... what chapter contains the code on "use of deadly force"? What government code sections deal with eligibility?

They probably went back to the student test because they had such a high failure rate. Yes, really. You gotta figure there are about 4000 certified instructors in Texas. Maybe a dozen, or so, are on this forum. Maybe another couple of dozen are active in the TSRA. That means that about 3000 of them get their only info on CHL matters from the DPS. Need I say more?

No wonder so many seem to think it's illegal to carry in church!

You are absolutely correct! I believed that until I joined the forum and started reading the penal code for myself. Last renewal, the DPS lady lawyer was STILL teaching that churches, hospitals, etc, are still off-limits.

It would be nice if normal CHL had the option to take the test online and if we score at the instructor level (90% or better, I think) then we can skip the renewal class. If it's good enough for instructors, it should be good enough for mere CHL.

Unfortunately, the written test is ALSO scored at the student level. You only need 70% to pass. [facepalm] Now the proficiency test is required to score at least 90%, and that's with both revolver and SA.

Cool. If 70% online is good enough for instructors to renew without a class, it should be enough for the rest of us to renew without a class.

I think that Sgt Bamsche said he was going to start the process of creating an actual instructors test with different questions. As well, he needs to go through the student test and update it and get rid of the trick questions in there. Nothing like double or triple negatives to trick you up on a true false question .

He said the same to our class last year... Still hasn't got to it...mmmm

We use to get the newest updated test, that included the changes for the last session. These had been available months prior to the change.
