I purchased a PX4 sub compact 9MM in May and I had problems with the take down
pin and finally the slide coming off when I was shooting.

I had to send that gun back to shop Beretta and I received a brand new replacement in short order. I was really amazed at
the fast turnaround.

Seems that my gun had a broken retainer spring and that allowed the pin to drop out and the slide to come off.

My replacement gun has performed really well for me. Since I received it I have fired 500 rds without any issue whatsoever.

I have field stripped it twice and cleaned and applied some lube.

The key to the take down pin is to be a little cautious how much pressure is applied to that pin. The take down pin
is not supposed to be removed. It is supposed to stay in the gun. You rotate it down 90 degrees and move it out till you hear the second
click. Then release the slide and it should come off the gun rather easily.

It is taking me a lot longer to field strip that gun because I am being very cautious when trying to back that pin out. I am sure it will be
easier for me as I get used to doing it.

Anyhow, the gun fed and fired the 500 rds without a jam, misfeed or any problem whatsoever.

I also would like to add that it fires very well "out of the box". I still need to get used to the trigger but that is common with any
new weapon.

I would now have to say that Beretta customer service was excellent and the Beretta PX4 SC is a really nice shooting little gun.
It is just a hair shorter than the Glock 27 and I think it is just as easy to conceal. I am now looking to buy the PX4 SC in the .40 cal.

Former NYC guy turned Texan aswell. I also picked up the subcompact in 9mm last month and had a little trouble reassembling it. The take down pin didn't want to reinsert back through the frame. I figured it was just tight fitting parts. Took a bit of time but got it back together. Really like the compactness of it and the recoil is light in 9mm. 40 cal shouldn't be much more of a kick with it's good ergonomics and the drop down finger rest. Plus the ten round mag capacity of the 40 cal make it ban friendly if you travel to NY or CA. Thanks for the info. I'll keep a better eye on the take down lever and retaining spring.

A few people I have met that own the PX4 SC think it is ok to take the pin completely out. The manual
says not to and on the web they advise not to take it all the way out. It can be kind of difficult because the pin is tight and moves
ever so slowly.

After my first one came apart I am treating this one with "kid gloves". I rotate the pin 90 deg and then bring it out to the first click.
After that I very slowly bring it out till I can feel/hear that second click.

I am on the Beretta forums and a poster there told me to lube the pin and the frame and after a few times taking it apart
it will become easier. I sure hope it does, my BP goes up just trying to field strip the gun.

Other than the issue of the pin the rest of the gun is great. Easy to conceal, easy to shoot and looks
awesome.

I sure miss the push cart hot dogs in NYC. I have not been back since '65.

Ah yes, the dirty water dogs. Don't miss them too much. Those guys probably haven't changed the water in those carts since 65' anyway.
I have noticed with my pX4 SC that the take down lever won't reinsert because the slide stop isn't holding the slide far enough back for the pin to clear the under side of the barrel where the spring and guide rod is seated. If that happens just pull the slide back a little more and the lever will re-insert all the way. Every gun has it's querks. Every gun the NYPD ever issued us had some issue or another, from S&W, Colt to Ruger revolvers. Even the (bordering on sacred) GLOCK had to be retooled in service because of phase three jams. Anyway, no machine is perfect. As long as it is safe and it works for you, drive it, shoot it or use it but above all, enjoy it. Good luck and btw, thank you for your service.

I remember when those hot dogs were 12 cents each. That included the mustard and the onions and tomato sauce.

Maybe it was the "dirty water" that made them taste so good. In '65 I think the subway was about .25 cents.

I heard they have cleaned up the "aroma" of the subways. I used to travel the subways almost every day
from Roosevelt Ave. to Court Street. I attended St. Francis College from '60-'64.

The only thing I have left in NYC is a tiny bit of DNA [my aunt].

Grew up riding the 7 train from Roosevelt into Manhattan. They've updated some things and changed the smell. They're out sourcing the "aroma" now.
BTW if your considering as I am, picking up one of the larger models, be aware that of the three Px4 models the sub-compact, compact and full size, only the sub has a take down lever. The other two use take down pins similar to the glock. Very small pins that sit in the finger rest groove that are on all of the Px4 frames. I'm not too fond of them, they are a little difficult to work with. Learned this at the Houston gun show last weekend. Figured I'd share the info.

Compact and Full use a rotary breach block and the subcompact use the traditional sliding breach.

I had one for a short while and it was a good shooter. You can get magazines that have a little finger grip/rest that drop down when pressure is applied to them. I thought that the magazine was releasing the first few times I fired it, but it was only the finger rest dropping down.

Thanks for the info. The only guns that interest me are the ones that are very concealable. You say that you took the train from Roosevelt to Manhattan. Where did you live? From '55-'64 I lived in Jackson Heights. I was near 74th St and Northern Blvd. Maybe we were neighbors. I am going to the range again tomorrow and fire off another couple hundred rds. With that gun I am shooting low. I think I am breaking my wrist too soon and hopefully I can work that out.

The finger grip/rest comes with the gun. You get two 13 rd mags one has the rest the other doesn't. Not sure yet if like that drop down rest.

Born Elmhurst General hosp. And lived a block behind the Jackson theatre on 82nd & Roosevelt also lived in long island city, richmondhill 70 to 96 and eventually Suffolk county 96 to 2011. I find Texas to be nicer by far. Definately more shooter friendly. NY state ban is bad enough with ten round mags and rifles with fixed stocks and welded flash hiders. But the seperate NYC ban doesn't allow for the forementioned and any pistol gripped Semi auto long arm. I'm sure the criminals are adding these new restrictions to their " don't do" list. More laws, less punishment. That is the way of things back there. NY is part of who we are but remember, when the colonists were fighting the crown for their freedom, most (not all) of NY, were loyalists. I guess I moved to Texas to be closer to America. Happy to be here. Be it NY or Texas, we're neighbors now. Houston could use some rain too. Since it's nothing but sunny skies anyway, enjoy your range time.

You are right about Texas. In fact, any state is better than NY. Not only is Texas more gun friendly it
is more friendly in every which way. There is something about NYorkers that makes them think that
the world ends once you go over the Washington or Verrzano bridges. My aunt still lives there and she is constantly amazed
at the progress that Texas has made. When I tell her we went to the mall today she asked "Oh, Texas has malls?" I told
her that they just finished building it and the whole state came to see. We also have indoor plumbing.

Got the full size PX4 for a bedside gun, still have it. The compact was too wide for me for carry.
