TX DL Renewal Issue & CHL

Forgive me if this has already been asked before, but I couldn’t seem to find an answer in the search results. My CHL is not due to expire until late in 2012. My DL is set to expire next month. I just renewed my DL online and now it appears I have to wait 45 to 60 days for the DL Renewal to arrive. I printed the paper option that states that I my DL is valid until I receive the renewed license. My question is am I still able to carry past the DL expiration date with the temp paper while waiting for my DL Renewal. The address on both DL and CHL is correct. I thought you had to have both CHL and DL valid to carry. Just not clear on temp renewal paper of DL until renewal arrives.

You do not need the DL to carry:

As long as the paper copy is valid, you should be covered.

You cannot carry under you CHL without your Drivers License or identification certificate issued by the department. Both must be presented if asked to display the license by a police officer.
GC §411.205. REQUIREMENT TO DISPLAY LICENSE. (a) If a license
holder is carrying a handgun on or about the license holder's
person when a magistrate or a peace officer demands that the license
holder display identification,
the license holder shall display both the license
holder's driver's license or identification certificate issued by the
department and the license holder's handgun license.

But isn't the CHL now accepted by the State as a valid form of identification?

In some places yes, but that still does not change the requirement to display BOTH.

I believe the printed reciept for the DL is as valid as a license itself. Having the receipt should satisfy the requirement and you still have your old plastic DL.

You can use the paper to buy a new gun from an ffl. It is a valid temp DL/id. I would just keep the expired plastic so you also have your pic.
I also renewed online but never received the plastic in the mail and a cop forgot to give back my paper temp on a traffic stop . I just used my exp DL when asked by Leo for ID. Never had a prob cuz when they run it to will tell them it is valid in the system.

What if you do not have a drivers' license? My FIL has a CHL but does not have a DL. Due to partial disability, he is no longer able to drive and has let his DL expire. He normally uses a Military ID, when some form of ID is required. Does he now have to get an ID issued by the state?
Edited for clarity.

45 to 60 days, wow. My wife renewed her TXDL early last month and got it in about 10 days.

My answer would be "YES", he should get the DPS-issued Identification Card. He must have had a DL or ID when he applied for his CHL.

Nope, just used his Military ID. I doubt that I or anyone else could convince him he needs to get a DPS issued ID.

Must not have applied online, then -- you need a DL number or ID number to get into the system. You also need to include that number on paper applications. Never heard of DPS accepting anything else. Are you sure he didn't get the CHL before letting his DL expire? If you are sure, then I don't know what to tell you.

On Second thought, call DPS and ask them...

That won't cut it if he gets pulled over and asked to present identification and he is carrying. The law is clear and doesn't appear to leave any other options other than a Texas State issued ID or a Texas DL. I see no wiggle room in the below requirement.
GC §411.205. REQUIREMENT TO DISPLAY LICENSE. (a) If a license
holder is carrying a handgun on or about the license holder's
person when a magistrate or a peace officer demands that the license
holder display identification, the license holder
shall display both the license
holder's driver's license or identification certificate issued by the
department and the license holder's handgun license.
