So we are getting dressed to head to the in-laws for thanksgiving lunch/dinner and my wife sees me strap on my Glock 27 and says "do you really think you need a gun at my parents for thanksgiving?" I turn and say "well you never know if your dad will get out of line!"(joke). I told her I've gone 33 years without the need for a gun and without the right to carry one, and now that I can carry I plan to everyday! I also pray to go 70yrs without needing it but I'll be prepared if someone tries to harm out family!!

I don't wish to push her to carry but I do want her to be comfortable knowing I'm carrying all the time. Any ideas? I know I know...I should get dressed while she's not looking!

Craig, one thing that I always replied to my wife when she questioned me like this early on was, "I hope not." A major part in your success or failure in making your point will be in the tone with which you try to make that point. I've always found that a sympathetic yet reassuring tone helps. I have not heard of many home invasions on Thanksgiving when the people were home, but you could also point out that your home could become a target while you are not home. On days like this bad guys can be relatively sure that you will be away for a few hours, not just a short trip. You wouldn't want to come home to someone in your house unarmed.

With black Friday gearing up for a 10PM start tonight, that means the thugs that prey on shoppers will be getting an early start as well. Safe travels my friend.

AS above. The real thing is not at your inLaws. It is the trip there, trip back, having to run to the store (local stop & rob) & coming home. She cannot gauarantee anything about those times.

I agree with longtooth and I agree with you. I enjoy my right to carry and breaking down on the highway after dark doesn't appeal to me. I calmly, patiently, every time explained my being thorough not paranoid carrying and I no longer get questioned.

Another possible response to that question is, "If I knew what day I was going to need it, I would just stay home". My wife is finally becoming cognizant that I only carry at certain times; those times are only the days of the week that end in "Y". As another poster said, you probably would not need it at your inlaws (but who knows?), but you could need it at any point on the trip home. My father-in-laws (stepfather-in-law and father-in-law), both have more firepower than I do. The only problem is that none of their stuff is loaded and ready to go. They would have to search for the gun, and then for the bullets.

When we got to the in laws my brother and father in law were both thrilled to know I was carrying and wanting to check out the new pistol. Neither of them carry. My wife just smiled when she saw how excited they were about my new chl and they both were asking a ton of questions about laws and the chl class!!

I guess you could say I dressed "up"this Thanksgiving. I usually carry a Glock 27 or 30. Thanksgiving, I was breaking in my holster for my new Dan Wesson CBOB. I was even at my own home, but the in-laws did come for a visit. All kidding aside, you could say I come close to 24/7 carry. I started carrying around the house about 6 months ago when I noticed that home invasions were really in the rise.
