Question, can you really clean you polymer pistol in the dishwasher? I mean it seems a little unorthodox but I watched a youtube video some time ago and the gun seemed really clean! Just a thought...

Though I did clean my Glock 19 in 1989, and again after shooting it in 2008 ... just for fun.


I'd just wait till Spring and go swimming/wadefishing with it in an all Kydex IWB holster (not leather)

Never gave much thought to a dish washer, but years ago in another life, we boiled our AR15 in a 55 gallon barrel to get it clean. I remember thinking at the time it was strange, but that's what the Drill Sergeant said to do.

I have heard of Glocks being cleaned in diesel fuel after they went for an ocean swim, because diesel was about the only thing available that would clean and provide some rust protection for the metal parts.

I think you could clean a gun in about any kind of cleaning solution or apparatus, but I expect some work better than others.

I took a stainless Rossi revolver for a bath in a mountain hot spring one time, then I just blasted it with aerosol of some kind, Gunscrubber or CLP or something like that.

Either is fine. The barrel, guide rod, spring, and any other small parts go in the utensils holder.

Do the forks have to go in handle first?

My buddy washed his in the dishwasher, so I figured... what the heck, they are Glocks right?

Washed mine out of curiosity, of course they didn't really need to be cleaned... but it worked.

Here is the step by step guidline on how I clean my Glocks:

1)Unholster
2)Drop mag & Clear
3)Clear
4)Clear
5)Give it to my wife, so she can clear
6)Rub metal slide against my t-shirt to wipe off any condensation/sweat/grime
7)For tough to clean grime, spit on metal once, then wipe. Repeat as necessary.

Of course, every month I give it an extra special, in depth cleaning:
1) Repeat steps 1-7
2)Spray with CLP

About once a year I field strip and clean....:
1)Repeat steps 1-7
2)Remove slide from frame
3)Spray the under side of the slide with CLP
4)RE-assemble slide to frame

I would worry more about rusting the small parts: springs, roll pins, etc. So long as the finish on the slide/barrel is reasonably intact, I don't imagine a trip through the Maytag would incur any damage there. As for the grip... well, it really IS tupperware, isn't it?

Wasn't it common back in the days of corrosive primers to use soap and water?

Considering I have routinely cleaned all my black powder guns, including my BP revolver, in hot soapy water for a couple of decades with no issues I suspect you could dishwasher any gun as long as you remove any wooden grips. Would make sure to completely dry and lube the gun afterwards.

The real question, do you add spot remover?

Why would someone put a firearm contaminated with lead, oil, grease, and Lord only knows what else in a dishwasher that they wash their dishes in? No wonder so many of the Glock fanboys act a little "different" Get a jug of "Poly Dunkit" from Cylinder and Slide and keep the haz mat out of your kitchen appliances.

I don't know the answers.

However, I know that I can completely eliminate that possibility if I NEVER use a dishwasher to clean a firearm.
