Ok, after thinking about this I suspect I know the reason, but I am going to ask anyway. I am right-handed and I have been considering sliding my holster around to about 5:30 or so, just past my right rear pocket. This enables me to reach my wallet and provides better draping for the setup. When I try, that the forward cant of the holster makes reaching the grip awkward as the rotation of the shoulder and wrist outward feels unatural. Reaching back with back of my hand sliding along my back feels more natural. This would argue for almost using a reversed holster setup in which the grip faces the lateral body edge towards my right rear pocket. Now the suspicion I have is, that the normal motion from there upon drawing from the holster would be to sweep the muzzle along the body as it rotates to the front, which would be bad, for a variety of reasons. For those of you who carry in the back, is it an acquired comfort thing to get used to the forward cant and grip direction?

I had the exact same problem. It takes a few days to get used to the new position, but I now wear it a 5:30 exclusively.

I carry a full-size 1911 in a Galco SOB holster at the 5:30 position. I had gone to Bullet Trap in Plano (hate the range but they've got a nice store) to check out their SOB options. They had this holster made for a 3" 1911 and they let me try it out there in the store. I was so comfortable with it that I paid for it and walked out with it right then and there. There was 0 adjustment time. And no, the muzzle doesn't sweep my body when I draw. When drawing from the SOB holster the muzzle points behind me (parallel to my back) and then down to the ground as I bring in to the ready position.

BTW, I've read where people have said that falling with an SOB holster can injure you pretty good. But I have taken a fall onto my back and wasn't harmed in the least. Oh it ached a bit, but no more than falling on your right/left side if you were carrying at 3 or 9 o'clock.

Prior to Rt Shoulder surgery I practiced with and liked 530 postion. I thinks its an excellent choice for those whose shoulder range of motion allows.

Try a made-for-SOB holster.
It will have a more extreme cant and might solve your draw problems using a traditional knuckles-out draw stroke.

One option I use is a small of the back holster. It makes drawing very easy.

That might even work for me. Thanks alot. I was unaware of exactly what a SOB holster was. I love this site.

I carry a Browning Hi Power that has a double stack magazine and it really doesn't bother me while sitting/driving. I don't carry at work where I sit for most of the day, but I do wear the holster and don't notice it at all. Matter of fact it seems to help with my sitting posture and that's good for my back.

Where did you get that holster from? I've never seen anything like that before.

That is one expensive holster. Yowza. They sell some similar for about 80 dollars. NY though? Wow.. I'm surprised.

It was cheaper when I bought mine a few years ago. If I remember correctly I paid around $85 for it. They've gone way up. You should be able to find a similar product closer to home and cheaper.

I guess they have enough NYPD business to keep the doors open.

Thanks for the feedback. I dont know how you knew to recommend a SOB holster, unless my wife has been talking here, and thats a whole different thread.

I am a large fellow and spent several years engaged in high speed contact sports, sometimes with larger people , sometimes with like-sized folks , and just occasionally with the fast little guys . One the reminders of the Glory days is a shoulder that now doesn't reach as well as it used to, just when I need it to reach a longer way around then it used. I will take your suggestions to my search engine and hopefully find one I like.

My Galco SOB was only $80 at Bullet Trap.
