I know someone (Charles?) has this at the tip of their tongue. What are the CHL numbers compared to LEO in Texas?

It doesn't matter, it isn't important... I was just wondering... who constitutes the larger potentially armed force against the BAD GUYS? And if you add up the potential off duty but carrying LEOs with the CHLs, what does that make the potentially armed probably good guy percentage of the Texas population?

From student feedback in renewal classes for the past decade, you best not count on much more than maybe 1/3 of CHLers actually packing regularly outside of their home or vehicle.

I think the younger ones get it and then not long after the responsibility and requirements (gear) to carry 24/7 successfully kinda dulls their desire.

That and with the passage of the MPA & removal of parking lot bans, I'm willing to bet that many will not renew.

I think that the Old Folks here are the ones that contribute to keeping the CHL program in Texas alive. I could be wrong, I have been before, even on this Forum!

According to this article there were 73,000 police officers in Texas in 2009. There are about 450,000 CHL'ers in TX if I recall correctly. So even if only 1/3 of CHL'ers carry regularly, you have approximately 2 CHL / PO.

...because of personal choice, health issues, etc, I think it realistic to say one in five who carry faithfully would feel the obligation to step up beside LEOs should things get really bad...either in isolated cases or on a grand scale...

Not all of us..

I carry just about everywhere i can, but as a student it is difficult sometimes. I do my best though.

I, as well, am young, and carry everywhere I legally can. Of course I haven't been at it as long, however I don't plan to change. I miss the form fitting clothes, though.

These statistics are pretty hard to establish among a group that relies mainly on secrecy. Often times when in a crowd, I wonder how many armed citizens are interspersed.

Well, I'm double counted. Let's not forget other LE, like Feds. Then there's level 4 security people etc. Plus those who car carry sans license.

I carry everywhere I can but working at a school means no carry inside and no parking lot storage.

As of October there were 517,000 active CHL holders in TX. Probably many more by now.

Here is an even better stat. There are around 52 million households that own guns. There are 1.43 million active duty arm forces personnel with and additional 0.85 million reserves. 52 million civilian gun owners, 2.28 million military.
