I seem to recall suffering through at least 7 global catastrophes so far.
Starting in the 60's, I was certain to die from DDT poisoning before I reached adulthood.
If that didn't kill me, it didn't matter, since were all positively going to die from overpopulation before 1980.
Then, they told me in school that we were heading into another ice age.
Of course, we had nuclear war drills every month, because surely someone would "push the button" one day. (And hiding under a desk would save our lives).
Then, we were all going to die from UV exposure when the FREON depleted the ozone layer.
Next, the genetically altered foods would mutate and attack us.
Then, the global warming.
What will "they" come up with next?
Biological attack and terrorism. Failed too, no?

You missed acid rain.

Hey, those were some sturdy desks. Not like the flimsy ones of today.

Does anyone remember that fluoridation in the water would do terrible things to us?

Someone needs to tie these alarmists to chairs, with their eyes propped open with toothpicks, and show them a simple animated film of all the natural "catastrophes" the Earth has gone through since it was formed. All the impacts, all the resurfacing, continents pulling apart and back together and apart again, the ice ages, the global warming, the polar shifts, the oceans turned into deserts and vice versa, all the living species that came and went, and basically smack them silly while they watching! And besides, as we were told years ago, it's the cranberries that will kill us all anyway.

I remember the Cranberries. They sang some nice songs.

You'll be even worse if you ever see Devil's Tower in person. There is a KOA (campground) right near the base of it and it was downright creepy to watch the sun set behind it.

And about what next - it doesn't really matter. You just know that it might be a mini-crisis that is enlarged to a calamity or that they'll whip one of up a suitable situation doesn't present itself in the right time-frame. It is a tactic as old as mankind. As soon as you are in trouble, go find (or invent) a catastrophe and then spend all day wringing your hands about it. Pretty soon, everyone has forgotten what they really wanted to or should focus on.

Liberal psychiatrists determined they were really not "mad." They were just "cows with issues."
