LMT Piston was excellent. But it was too heavy. I'm about to buy a new one and I'm torn - pick one and defend your choice. I can't seem to get off the fence.

Colt LE6920 $995 at GTs. Basic flat top rifle. Starts at 5.65 lbs. I would need a rail of sorts to get it work ready.
Pros: light, cheap, big company
Cons: basic no frills, carbine length gas system (in digging ML), stock trigger

Rainier Arms RUC 14.5 - I would opt for the lightweight profile. $1400ish with LE pricing.
Pros: well set up, ff rail, ML gas system, Geissle trigger, solid parts, lots good reviews
Cons: cost, weight, smaller company


Please add to the list of pros and cons and weigh in. I'm so leaning towards the the RUC 16 right now, but the Colt is a solid proven platform, and can be had at a good price from GT.

Your Dept. does not provide patrol rifles?

What does the department authorize you to have? Are their specific manufacturers or specs that you can use?

Thought about a Larue PredatAR? Looks really similar to that Ranier RUC 14.5 and only weighs 6.25 lbs, but has a 16" barrel. Its listed as the same price as the RUC and Larue's website says they give a 10% discount to MIL/LEO.

This one sounds like a winner, the newer predatAR series looks like a really awesome rifle when you compare it to others in the same category. Its not fair to compare a basic rifle from an out of the box company, to something like a LaRue or POF or LWRC.

Between those 2 choices, once you add a decent rail system and a nice trigger to the Colt you're at RUC prices anyway. Might as well go RUC and make it easy on yourself (unless you don't like Giselle triggers or their free float for whatever reason)

POF is iffy. Our tac snipers ordered two .308s and sent them back within a week due to quality issues.

LWRC and Larue are nice, as was my LMT but if I'm getting a ready to go rifle it would be the RUC.

But, everyone should have a Colt rifle right?

Are the LEO authorized to own personal full-auto? Or, only Dept. issued only?

How about a Bravo Company USA mid length? They make good rifles that are considered tier one rifles. From what I have read they also have good customer service.
edit: Plus they are in the same price range as the Colt. I have also seen on Ranier Arms webpage a nice Daniel Defense midlength for 1200.

BCM Midlength is a good choice - if available - they have been in short supply recently. I thought about buying a lower and upper and just making a BCM rifle.

The DD's are in the running too, but heavier from what I've seen.

BCM had middies in stock this past weekend. I ended up going with PSA for my upper. With the sale they were running, I feel I got more upper for the money with PSA.

All this rifle talk is getting me itchy again. I saw a few RRA Elite Operator 2's just under $1k. How would something like that stack up against the models listed here?

FOR ME, better rifles are out there than the RRAs. They are pretty but I've never been that impressed with them. Their 2 stage triggers are decent though.

They all seem very similar. Is it the setup or quality or something else? Is it the twist rate or chrome lined barrels or M4 feed ramps? My problem is that there are many people that use RRA, Colt, DD, and others that all say their rifle has been everything they wanted and been completely reliable, so I have a difficult time discerning why there is such a difference is their prices. I even saw some rifles recently that had skulls all over the receiver that were going for something like $2,400. I asked and the salesman said they are pretty much a custom built rifle and supposed to very good. Since I don't really know how big a difference there can be between many of these rifles I don't think skulls are worth several hundred to over a thousand dollars difference in price.
