poor victim selection. good on the man who defended himself. maybe other scums who think that it's okay to pick on defenseless people will think twice before attacking.

Probably not. Many of them have been conditioned by a system that teaches them that they bear no responsibility for their actions and that if they do get caught, their parents along with the media will blame everyone else.
Deshaun’s mother said the police had it wrong: The Wrong Guy was the real attacker.
“This is a monster, this is a monster after children,” Alexis Jones said. “This man is still on the streets, and my son is sitting home trying to recover. My son has two stab wounds in his back, one on his side, and he has a slice on his neck.”
DeAndre’s mother joined in.
“I just don’t believe it. My son was not raised to be a troublemaker,” said Valda Felton. “I don’t want them or anyone else to make my child out to be a villain.”

Good story. Guess you don't need a gun to defend yourself, that guy ended up doing an all right job against two attackers.

Actually, this was Bush's fault.

Well I guess a knife will do. But I would rather a gun...takes much less skill to wield. Note to all: avoid being out in public in the evening in the city/close in suburbs....feral youth on the prowl.

when there are no firearms involved, a person who knows how to use a knife can do massive damage in minimal time.

This is why knives really truly terrify me. I would be more nervous with a guy holding a knife to me than a gun to me. Both are going to get the same response out of me though.

I hear the police feel much the same way. Knives never run out of bullets...
I recently started carrying a knife again. This thing is ridiculous - opens automatically as you pull it out of your pocket, and is absolutely off the charts sharp. It almost scares me when I'm on the *right* end of it!

Oh, I would not agree with that at all. Wielding a knife is pretty natural, actually, takes much less training than a gun. Of course there are things that you can learn that make you even more effective with a knife, but it is a pretty instinctive tool right off the bat. At mugging/punching distances, I am more afraid of a knife than a pistol. Doesn't mean a pistol is trivial, but a knife is really wicked in close combat.
Now,
defending against a knife...that takes some learnin' and trainin'. And it's always hard, even then.

I'm definitely no expert with a knife, I can tell you that much. Our instructor (waaaaay back in college Tae Kwon Do / Streetfighting Club) gave us a few pointers (no pun) on how to properly deploy / use a good knife and they have stuck (no pun, again) with me to this day. A few years later I was showing / discussing the techniques I learned to a black-belt buddy (I forget the discipline he was in)...his comment was this: our instructor gave us this advice, if you see an attacker holding the knife like this (with blade pointed down along the wielders forearm) it probably means they know what they are doing with a knife...at the very least you will get sliced...it's better not to engage if at all possible....

Wise words, in my opinion. You may not kill an unarmed attacker when you have a knife, but you will, at the very least, introduce them to the blade and a loss of blood.

I carry both, and in close quarters you are prob right...but knives you have to be up close and personal....a gun you can defend from a few feet off
