Well folks, channel 9 out of the Midland/Odessa area is running an article about Texans using those scary out of state Concealed Carry Licenses. Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter went on record as saying "If I run across one, I'm going to shake them down," Painter said. "Just to make sure they are qualified."

"If I run across one, I'm going to shake them down," Painter said. "Just to make sure they are qualified."
What the heck does that mean? Is he going to give them an impromptu shooting exam along the side of the road? An oral exam on Texas gun laws?

Doesn't "shake down" usually mean a search? What would that prove?

I hope the County budget has enough money to cover the successful law suits when he "Shakes them down" without probable cause. :banghead:

Good way for him to maximize tourism and business to his County! Yea, RIGHT.........

I hope he gets "Shaken down" by adjacent County LEO's when he is in THEIR jurisdiction. Maybe they will find a few things in his car that he should not have! :thumbs2:

Better yet......maybe he will get the "Shake down" by DPS!

Of course I know that "Professional Courtesy" will prevail and he can carry on violating "regular" people's rights as he desires. I hope the residents of the County vote him out at the first opportunity.

My answer: "Just as long as Painter doesn't mind being "shaken down" to make sure he's qualified, which he seems to already be demonstrating that he isn't, by his ignorance of Texas law and the US Constitution."

Exactly, he is one of those LEOs who believes he is the law instead of understanding that his job is to protect and serve according to the law.

Isn't the Midland PD the department that has had death threats against them and their families? And haven't they also had ambush threats and fake calls to places so they could be ambushed?

I just googled it and that is the same PD. Also Fort Stockton was mentioned. The threats mention several people by name. According to the article, the sherrif has not seen these threats.

I'm not saying it's an excuse for his stance, but it sounds like those guys might just be a little bit tightly wound up out there.

I am sure that they are watching their backs. The article about the threats was posted Nov 13th. The one about the out-of-state CHLs Nov 21th. Of course, the Texas AG doesn't agree with the sheriff.

Law enforcement in Midland is included in the recent public threats. However if those threats are really causing them to be stressed out to the point that the Sheriff says he is going to shake down folks then I suspect that the sheriff needs to retire so someone who works better under pressure can take over his remaining term. Just about every law enforcement agency in this area has bounties on their officers by the mexican cartels, so he should be used to it by now.
