Holsters for Bikers? Suggestions.

Post by Wildscar »

Yall knew this one was going to come eventually. Since the Gun suggestions and the Ammo suggestions post has come up with some good info. I figured it was time for this one.

Since there was another post about carrying while on a motorcycle it got me wondering. What would be a good holster for that. I was thinking some type of shoulder holster that would hide it under your jacket good. That way when you layover the gas tank to go faster it won't poke out under your jacket. I know a Harley or Gold wing you would not have to worry about it but for those of us who ride Sport bikes might have to be conscious of that. I assume I'm not the only one who rides a sport bike here that this post would benefit. Also something to lock it in place but not be cumbersome while pulling it out if needed. Would hate to be doing 75(or more ;-) ) and feel something hit your leg and then the ground. :eek6  That would make for a bad day.

I've been pluggin this one lately. I'm wearing it now, seated at my desk at work, and barely know it's there. The pistol does not move at all and like all good leather holsters, I can turn it upside down and shake it and the gun won't come out.

That being said, it might cause a stir if the wind were to blow your jacket and shirt-tail up to show your heater to the traffic behind you. You might have to sit on your shirt-tail or do something else to counteract that.

I'm no holster expert, but I do ride, fly, and drive a lot, so I understand what you're up against. I personally like shoulder holsters, since I usually wear some kind of jacket even in summer. A shoulder rig with tie-downs on both sides will keep things from shifting when you streamline or hang on turns. The downside is that salts from perspiration can build up in the holster, so maintenance is critical to gun longevity.

Fortunately, you live in an area where you can try on many different combinations of holsters, belts, and harnesses and get your system fitted right the first time. Dallas Public Safety Supply is on Elm east of downtown, a couple of blocks from 75. They have the best selection, prices, and customer service I've seen in the area.

I also like Galco's front-pack holster for carry without a jacket. It's very secure on a bike, but it may not integrate well with your social group. The pack-type carriers do the best job of keeping water, salts, mud, and grit away from your weapon.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess since there was only two posts that this might be an area that I'm going to have to do some personal testing on. Good thing is I have a lot of time between now and the time that Ill actually be able to implement it. Ill post back with what I find.

Hi-power those look nice. However I still would be leery of those on a bike. I would worry about them shaking out over a long night of riding. As for the wind blowing it up and showing all to the world I dont think I would have to worry about that too much. I wear a jacket all the time that's designed for riding and keep it zipped up. Never know when it going to be tested. (Been there done that.)

Let me know what you come up with.

My older brother is going to take his bike from the Conroe area to Tennessee in late April.

He normally carries a Springfield Ultra Compact in a Milt Sparks Summer Special, but has decided to buy a Kahr P-9 for this trip...and have a pocket sewn inside his leather riding jacket.

Whatever he comes up with, you can bet it will be something that works well, but any suggestions will be considered and appreciated.
