Photographs of a new public housing project in Houston. What do you think? A symptom of our current society, or the solution.

It is in Shelia Jackson Lee's district. What they don't understand is granite countertops are so passe' now.

(Caution may raise your blood pressure)

Sounds like the appropriate district to be in.

They will be beat-to-crap, unmaintained, burnt-out cesspools in less than 10 years.

Why is public housing nicer than military barracks and college dorms?

Solution?

One need only examine the history of tenants in "public housing" to conclude that this approach does NOTHING to reduce poverty. On the contrary, "public" ANYTHING seems to ENCOURAGE poverty.

WHY, if these programs are "assistance" programs, does it seem like they rarely, if ever, seem to eliminate the NEED for these types of programs? There are multiple generations of citizens who exploit these programs, and there has been since they started.

These programs do little more than SUPPLEMENT the lifestyle of these citizens, and the bill is being paid by you and I.

That is ridiculous, most of those programs are. Is there not a time limit for someone to use them? Ie here is housing for 6 months while you get on your feet?

While I was stationed in R.I. in 1971 they built a 6 story public housing unite. It and the parking took up an entire city block. Within 3 months half of it was unlivable. One of the ocupents decided to have a barbique and used the bathtub for their grill. A fiberglass unit is not fireproof. The fire burned almost half the building down. There were complaints about shady contractors and that they cut corners by not having enough fire brakes etc. you give a person something, they won't respect it like they do if they worked for and earned it.

I'm in construction and have been part of these HUD projects in houston. It's crazy seeing all the quality stuff that gets put into these places paid by the city.

Crown molding, granite, faux wood floors..etc its nuts.

I live in a 4 year old house, I just couldn't afford the upgrade at the time.....some day I'll replace the carpets and the counters (both very cheap)

Because they are the "disenfranchised less fortunate that deserves what everyone else has". Hey, if you can afford it for yourself, you can afford it for then.

Not liking where our country is headed.
