I heard I have to send it back, if so, to whom?
Can I cut it in two before I send it?

You do not need to send it back. Destroy it, shred it, frame it, make it into a paperweight, whatever.

But you do NOT need to send it back.

Actually, if the license is modified, as in a change of address, the law states that you are to send the old one back. You don't have to send an expired license back because it's expired and worthless but when a license is modified, both will show to be current. The DPS only wants us to have one. I'm sure the Texas DL is the same.
GC §411.187. SUSPENSION OF LICENSE. (a) The department shall suspend a license under this section if the license holder:
...........
(4) fails to return a previously issued license after a license is modified as required by Section 411.184(d);

Section 411.184 only deals with a license modified from NSA to SA. All other license changes (address, name, etc.) are not a modification as the old one would no longer be a valid license because it has incorrect information on it. We were told in class that if they needed the license back they would request it be returned in a letter included with the new license.

I remember them telling me different when I was up in Georgetown. Perhaps they changed the rules since last year. It only takes a stamp so I'll continue to tell my students to send them back if they need to be modified.

Change of address is a duplicate license. No need to return old one. Change of category in a modification to license. Need to return old one. :tiphat:

Apart from the legalities, and it appears there are many legal experts here, what are the practical pros and cons of returning or not returning old license? :txflag: :patriot:

Pretty much the same as keeping your old driving license, vice destruction or mailing to DPS.

You don't send it in. Destroy it. A change of address is NOT a modified license; a moidified license is only a change from NSA (Non-Semi-Auto) to SA (Semi-Auto)

When I moved and got my new license, I fed the old one into my shredder.

Thank you all for your help. I am currently 25 years young and managed to keep the same picture from when I was 18 until I turn 30 years old since they don't expire until 2017. Lmbo! :biggrinjester:

Not sure of all the rules around when to mail the old back in, I do know that my instructor told our class that if we do a change of address or last name change, the old needs to be mailed back in to prevent potential issues in the future when renewing. Not sure if he is right or wrong, but in the end I think it is worthwhile to call and find out.
