The women injured when Los Angeles police opened fire on them during the manhunt for ex-cop Christopher Dorner have reached a $4.2-million settlement with the city, sources told The Times.

I can only assume, that one fired and the rest fired hearing the gun fire. The news isn't reporting that they were allegedly driving at night w/o their lights on. Anybody that has patrolled in those weee hours know that news paper people drive idiotic. I have stopped so many I have lost count. Not saying that warrants getting shot, but the media isn't putting all the facts out there. I can see a hyped up officer firing at a dark truck at night with no lights on driving idiotic. There may have been verbal commands as well prior to the shooting that were not followed. Not saying I condone it but I can understand that. I will be curious to see the outcome for the officers once the case is investigated. Glad to see the city do right by the victims.

One thing's for certain. She won't be delivering newspapers any more.

Since we can't bash LEO on this forum, why is it OK for you to paint all newspaper carriers with such a broad brush? My experience is completely opposite and the officers I have interacted with appreciate the extra eyes on the streets at night. I know my area and can report when something is amiss. I have had officers turn on their lights, but as soon as I hold a newspaper out the window they turn off the lights, give a wave, and go on.
PS I always have lights on high beam in the neighborhoods.

I know that some HOA ask paper drivers to not drive with lights on. Could this be the case here?

Painting with a very broad brush and I know you take issue when posters here paint with the same brush, just using a different color.

I don't think they got enough money. $42 million would have more like it.....

I will say I am sorry for the broad brush as it was not meant to offend anybody. Just what I have seen on grave yard patrol and something the media is not covering in this specific case.

HOA cannot require somebody to drive w/o lights on if it is a public road.

I was kind of wondering about that one myself. It seems like the HOA would be begging for a "situation" if some pet or kid got squished by a paper guy. Funny thing is, many years ago... like 30 of them, I delivered papers to make some extra money. Times were tough and we had no uncle Obama to give us free stuff so we took second jobs if needed. Anyway, I have to admit that I would do some silly stuff driving around at 4A.M. I made a science out of driving with my knees while rolling newspapers as I went and throwing them out the window at the same time. At the time I was a smoker and could light a cigarette at the same time. The car would be veering all over the road but I got lucky and never hit anything other than a few mail boxes.

Needless to say, I fit the stereotype mentioned earlier on in the thread.

Hard not to do some silly stuff in those hours. I imagine there will be some unemployed officers when this is finished.

Maybe I wasn't clear about HOAs. I know some HOA that ask and not require nightly drivers not to slow drive with their headlight on but only with their parking lights. My ex wife's husband delivered papers for the Dallas Morning and he was asked by more than one to do the same. I have a coworker and his son drives security for a couple well to do neighborhoods and he is asked to not drive with lights on.

At any rate, driving around after dark with your lights off is not wise to do.

The city, who has more of the facts, chose to pay millions of dollars instead of risking a trial where the facts might become a matter of public record. Since we're not sworn in as jurors, we have the right to consider that fact when forming opinions about the incident.
