Legal ? Detachable Mag on SKS

I got a plastic 40 rd, "detachable" mag that fit instead of the SKS removable but fixed 10 rd mag. There is warning on the instructional sheet that installing the detachable mag on SKS that comes with fixed mag is against Federal law. Also, it was mentioned that there is an exception for "testing purposes".

Is that true?

Any SKS that has been imported post the 1994 assault weapons ban cannot be legally modified to put a detachable mag on it. If the SKS was pre-ban and had already been modified or came that way, then the rifle is legal, but you can't modify even a pre-ban one now.

You can find some FAQ's on the SKS here http://www.victorinc.com/SKS-FAQ.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Keith,

Thanks for the pointer to the link where they discuss what modification you can't do to an SKS. I guess I paid and get delivered of part that I cannot use but for testing only. I would not keep it installed or maybe never ever try to install it on my M59

It is not a big deal. The SKS as it is with fixed mag is a beauty. :fire

Actually, I think you can add the detachable magazine, but you just can't stop there. You'll need to change a few more things. It has to do with the 992 (r) regulation. Essentially, what you have to do is turn your import gun into a US made gun by replacing the original imported components with US made components.

Correct. However, I have no intention to destroy the originality of the Yougo M59.

Yeah, keep it orginal, Beiruty. I'm kicking myself now for not buying one back when Cabela's had a bunch of them on the rack. :cryin

Here is the beauty of SKS:

Note: Even the Trigger group is removable with one-click push button! Amazing design. That was before WW2!
