RIP brother!

Praying the 2nd officer survives.
The officers arrived at the complex to find the male inside apartment #6E holding a long rifle in a threatening manner. The Tactical Response Unit was deployed to 1611 Grandon Dr. at 11:56pm. The tactical officers were attempting to speak with the armed male when he fired one shot. The male then came to the door with his hands up but failed to come outside, the officers attempted to take the suspect into custody when he backed into his apartment and armed himself with the AK47 and began shooting at the officers.
Two Killeen Police Tactical officers were wounded; officers returned fire killing the suspect. Both officers were transported by ambulance to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in critical condition. One officer was stabilized and subsequently transferred to Scott & White Memorial Hospital; he is undergoing surgery at this time.It is with a heavy heart that I tell you the second officer succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by medical personnel at 1:27am. Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin has ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas

Heard about this early this morning from a friend.... darn shame.
Best thoughts for the officer still in the hospital... he is not out of the woods yet.

Very sad.
Is the autopsy necessary? Do we really need to know the path the bullet took?

They might be looking to recover the bullet. Match with gun and so forth. It is what it is. Make sure it was the shooter and not backup that shot him. Sucks all the way around.

Man I hate to hear this. May God bring peace to the families and to the department, and may the second officer recover from his injuries. Far too many officers die in the line of duty.

Tragic. Absolutely sickening, and awful for the family.
Don't see the armchair quarterbacks that the water nozzle thread brought out.

That may be due to the fact the "armchair quarterbacks" are perfectly capable of looking at and analyzing the available facts and quite easily differentiating between justified/unjustified, unlike most of the rose-colored-glasses-wearing, pro-LEO, cops-can-do-no-wrong cheerleaders. I'm really curious as to why you (and, obviously, others) feel the need to continually inject one thread discussion into another totally unrelated one. I would imagine that that chip must get awfully heavy at times.
In any event, in this instance, the bottom line is that the bad guy died, which was too bad, but he wrote his own ticket. That one responding LEO was taken down with another critically injured is, indeed, an absolute tragedy.

Killeen, TX is the home to Fort Hood and the 3rd Armored Division and 1st Air Cavalry.
PTSD, maybe?

Or moon phase, alcohol, suicidal gesture due to separation from a loved one, impending legal or financial issues, or loss of his pet snake..
PTSD is at times a contributing factor, but i'm sickened to see it so often used as an excuse for one our Soldiers misdeeds.
Oh not to be the back end of a donkey.. But Fort Hood is home to The Army's III CORPS comprising: 1st Cavalry Division, and much smaller units like 3d Cavalry Regiment, 11th Signal Brigade, 41st Fires Brigade, 21st Cavalry Brigade (Air Combat)..... There has not been a 1st Air Cav in many years now.... 1st Cav traded horses for Helicopters in the Vietnam era, and added Armored vehicles to the mix some years later 1st Cavalry Division was converted from the air-mobile light infantry role into a triple capabilities (TRICAP) division. The unit received an infusion of mechanized infantry and artillery, to make it capable of missions needing three types of troops; armored, air-mobility, and air cavalry. However, the TRICAP concept was short-lived, and by 1975, the division was equipped as a two-brigade armored division with its third brigade provided by the Mississippi Army National Guard's 155th Armored Brigade from 1984–1991.
Off my soap box now
