For hunting purposes, is it legal to insert a homemade wooden object into the shotgun magazine to be within legal limits of shotgun shell capacity? I took out the stopper that came with it and can't find it now. : /

My old shotguns had wooden plugs in them. Would not see why it wouldn't be legal as long as it served the purpose.

Thanks for your response. .... I did just find out that you can place a dowel into the magazine. My dad just bought a piece of sleep at Wal-Mart. The guy from Academy says that's what Mossberg uses anyways, so it should be legal.

The dowel or any "plug" can not be removable. It has to be behind (actually in front of) the magazine follower INSIDE the magazine. You can not simply insert a dowel or plug into the magazine through the loading port to take up space and then load the shells behind it. It requires removing the magazine cap and taking out the magazine spring keeper, putting the plug in then reassembly. For migratory bird hunting , including doves the maximum number of shells is limited to three (3), two in the magazine and one (1) in the chamber. Texas has no shell capacity limit for hunting any game except migratory birds.

I lost my plug once, I cut a piece of #2 yellow pencil to put in the magazine to replace it. The plug is supposed to be semi permanent you should have to take the gun apart to remove it.

When I sold guns I always installed the plug because I knew someone would invariably think you just shoved it in before loading the shells.

Wooden dowels, #2 pencils what ever works. My favorite is an old section of garden hose cut to length!

"lost my plug" (ok removed it for skeet) and couldn't find it again come dove season. Bought a replacement at Academy. Winchester Ranger 120.

I was appointed "safety and compliance" guy several years ago on a company-sponsored dove hunt. Wound up making "plugs" for several shotguns using a pocket knife and sticks. Then the Game Warden had to audacity to never show up.
