Twerking and Five Other Reasons to Consider a Retention Holster

I think there are some decent points for active retention consideration by concealed carriers even though I have only relied on "passive" retention IWB holsters. I can definitely see the "Chair Potato" point considering how many times I catch my work phone holster on the arm of my work chair while attempting to sit down.

A few of my favorite quotes:

You can retain water, an attorney, or perhaps your sanity. Just yesterday, I was retained by a very nice law enforcement officer. Wait, that was detained, not retained.

You play Grand Theft Auto—in real life. Or at least you spend a lot of time in a car. I’m amazed at how many times the act of getting in and out of a car puts some sort of pressure on my gun.

Thoughts? Active retention for concealed carry or passive/no retention? I've never considered active retention for CC, and have not had any issues with my firearm coming loose yet, but any thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages specifically for CC would be appreciated!

Funny article. I will recall this when I run across retention holsters in the future.

I use a Safariland Holster with an ALS (Locking system) sometimes. There really no guarantee agains a gun grap but retension holsters help. There also all kinds of different thumb break holsters.

Pecos, do use your retention holster to carry IWB and a tucked shirt? I wonder about the ability to draw quickly from a tucked shirt AND throwing retention in the mix.

When I pocket carry my little 9, I'm also curious how retention would work. Most of the pocket holsters I've seen on the market don't have retention, including the Desantis Nemesis I currently use.

My Retention holster is OWB. I find OWB my confortable for me. They make IWB retension holsters that are good. For me, I would practice with the same retension holster you carry. I wouldnt think IWB retension Holsters draw would be abstructed. Some you can adjust the tension to keep you gun in place.

I FINELY found 2 Holsters Im happy with. One (My Favorite)is a hi-rise paddle holster which hold my gun against my side & conceals really well. It have a tension adgusting screw I have is adjusted where gun wont fall out if I turn it upside down & shake gently.

I've never really thought about active retention holsters for my concealed carry needs however I do relate to a few points in the article. I know I have accidentally jarred my gun loose from the holster when entering the car and trying to adjust myself in the seat which was a bit scary at the time but I've since adjusted the holster and it hasn't happened again. I also catch my gun rather frequently and annoyingly on my computer chair when standing back up which really just irritates me and it's nothing an active retention holster would fix.

The only active retention holster I own is a shoulder holster and for that it's perfect.

I have no use for retention holsters in any context, whether for concealed carry or an uniformed LEO. It's a risk/benefit analysis and the risk of a concealed handgun being "snatched" is almost nonexistent. For a LEO, the risk of not getting your duty weapon out quickly enough is higher, in my view, than having someone snatch your pistol. This is especially true in view of weapon retention tactics every officer should know.

I especially hate the Serpa-style holsters that put the retention button in line with the trigger/trigger guard. There has been some talk about banning them in our IDPA matches at PSC. We haven't done it yet, but that day may come.

What you posted makes sense. The less step you have to take in a threat situation the better. Wow- opened some new thought!
My favorite holster from Safarriland just has adjustable tension screw & I have it adjusted tight enough to keep the gun from falling out. During practice I just have to draw the gun & it come out easily. I have the holster for my Glock G22 & one on the way form my G19.
I'm away of whats around (Or who is around me). I have to agree there other way to prevent gun grabs.

I personally believe my gun should be secure in my holster where it doesn't come out unintentionally or pop out.
