I am NOT posting this to second guess his decision. The officer made a decision to try and do the right thing. It was his call and I support it. Tragically it cost him his life :smash: .

I am posting this to give something to think about. It shows what can happen when somebody tries to do the right thing. I am trying to get a copy of a video we used back in the day on off duty survival. If I can I will share it. It had several stories like this on there and made one really think.

RIP to a brother LEO and former Marine :patriot:
ELLWOOD, Ill. — An off-duty Cook County sheriff's investigator was fatally shot while breaking up an armed robbery outside a family holiday party Friday night in west suburban Bellwood, police said.

Authorities said Cuauhtemoc Estrada, a 50-year-old former Marine, had been attending a family gathering Friday evening at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall, which is located on 30th Street of St. Charles Road.

It's always tragic when good men are killed by the criminal takers in our society. Things will never change until Society decides to meet them head on and refuses to be victims. Awesome American here.

I'm praying for the repose of his soul and for his family.

I wonder if he has children or is married. When I was 50, my children were 9, 10, and 12.

He was trying to stop the armed thugs from robbing his daughter.

Close by the Veterans Hall, the deputy saw his daughter and her boyfriend being held at gunpoint in an attempted robbery. The two men were holding a gun to his loved ones and were wearing ski masks. According to the police report, both robbers were threatening the victims while they had been bringing food from their nearby car inside for the early Christmas party.

Dying while defending your daughter. Has the respect of this father.

I'd rather he prevailed.

Hope they corner these guys and they resist.

I suppose, as a LEO, he had the obligation to try and arrest them first, no? I, however, not being a LEO, think I could have and might have shot first if I'd had a shot.

He was shot while reaching for his gun. I doubt he tried to arrest them before pulling his gun. Sounds like he didn't realize what was happening until it was too late.

There's never a good time for something like this to happen, but it will make it harder on the family being that it's Christmas time. I hope the family can find some justice and closure quickly.

My thinking exactly. He might have identified himself as a deputy while reaching for his gun and got shot before getting it out.

When I read this I was thinking that I am no longer a LEO so I don’t have to try to arrest them. I think I would try to get a good angle while pretending not to notice what was going on, then empty the magazine of my Kimber. I carry two spares.

How could the perps have handguns in Cook County (Chicago) - that's illegal. :headscratch

RIP and prayers for the family.
